Mr Darren Lui is a Fellowship Trained Deformity and Complex Spinal Surgeon at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in addition to seeing patients privately at The London Bridge Hospital.
Mr. Lui's specialist interest is in adolescent & paediatric deformity surgery such as scoliosis and kyphosis/Scheuremann's Disease. His expertise also covers a wide range of procedures, from revision, anterior and complex spinal surgery to failed back syndrome, scoliosis and kyphosis surgery. He has a specialist interest in oncology, including the treatment of primary spine tumours, metastases of the spine and balloon and radiofrequency kyphoplasty and also sees patients with more straightforward problems including back and leg pain (sciatica).
Mr Lui has worked as a Spinal Fellow in hospitals in Hong Kong, Ireland and England and was appointed as a consultant in 2016, working at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, before moving to join St George's.
He graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2001, later undertaking a Masters degree in laboratory-based science studying the role of insulin as an anti-inflammatory agent and its potential for treatment.
He has made over 150 podium presentations and produced 25 peer-reviewed publications in addition to supervising two Masters' degrees in Science. Mr Lui also retains a keen interest in research including into trauma and orthopaedics as well as spine surgery, and enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge with others.

A very pleasant gentleman who treated me like an intelligent person which I appreciated.

I had an overall negative experience with Dr Darren F Lui and his secretary Karina. 1. The appointment was made and no information about cancellation policy was sent. I called the clinic 24 hours before the appointment to reschedule the appointment and prior e-mailed his secretary Karina. A different lady from Wimbledon clinic (where Dr Lui works and they also make bookings for him) left me a message asking to call them back to reschedule. I e-mailed his direct secretary instead and asked to reschedule. In the meantime, the staff from Wimbledon clinic sent me a cancellation fee of nearly £200. Frustrating! I pushed them back and the fee got cancelled. 2. Now our experience with Dr D Lui. My 8 years old son has a misaligned shoulder blades and hips. We thought it might be a sign of scoliosis. Dr Lui confirmed by examination that there is no scoliosis, sent us to a scan. At the follow up appointment over Webex he said that everything was fine. On my question what about hips? The scan clearly shows that the hips are not aligned with each other, the response was "Oh, yes, they seem to be misaligned. Did you come to me because your son's legs were of different length? You might put something into his shoe so it will help. Also I refer you to physio specialist for an assessment. End of conversation. OK...My thoughts...Why did I come to you then was my question? Just to confirm that there is no scoliosis? Should not you explain why my boy's shoulder blades and hips are not aligned? Are you a back doctor and not? Disappointed! I will get a second opinion.

Mr Darren Lui was extremely professional and thorough. He made me feel comfortable during the appointments, was thorough in his examinations and relayed all medical feedback in a way that easy to digest. He made me feel like he was invested in my particular issue and his competency and attention to detail really showed his expertise as a consultant spinal surgeon (some medical experts leave you feeling like they have brushed over the issue and don't have an interest in solving your problem). Would highly recommend.

Mr Lui has a lovely bedside manner, is very approachable and highly knowledgeable. He gives thorough and easily understandable explanations of the problems and treatments and I always leave feeling like my mind has been put at rest.

I work with Darren at Wimbledon Clinics and have done so now for many years. He is an excellent surgeon who provides great care for his patients. He is a fantastic colleague to work with on complex cases as he has a very multidisciplinary approach. We often work together in this way and this close working increases quality outcomes for patients which is really rewarding for the team as well as the patient. I would highly recommend him if you need a surgical opinion.
