Dr Michael McKean

Dr Michael McKean is a dedicated Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician who provides specialised medical care for infants, children, and young people experiencing complex lung and breathing conditions. Combining clinical expertise with extensive leadership in child health policy, Dr McKean works closely with families to deliver tailored, compassionate care. His approach focuses on improving childhood respiratory health, helping young patients manage chronic conditions effectively while supporting their overall development and wellbeing.

His clinical focus encompasses a broad spectrum of paediatric respiratory conditions, with particular expertise in severe asthma, episodic virus-induced wheezing, long-term mechanical ventilation, respiratory sleep disorders, and complex airway disorders. In addition to managing general paediatric conditions, Dr McKean co-leads a regional severe asthma clinic and provides specialist input for children requiring cardiothoracic care and lung transplantation support. His clinical work incorporates advanced diagnostic evaluations and holistic treatment strategies designed to optimise respiratory function for every young person in his care.

Dr McKean completed his medical qualifications with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) alongside an intercalated Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree. He subsequently earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree focused on the biological mechanisms of virus-induced wheezing in children. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH). An active advocate for child health, he has served as Vice President for Policy at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, as well as a Clinical Director for children's services.
