Mr Matyas Fehervari

Mr Matyas Fehervari is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgeon specialising in gallbladder and bile duct disease, acid reflux and hiatus hernia, obesity and metabolic disease, Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), and abdominal wall hernias. His practice combines advanced endoscopic, laparoscopic and robotic techniques to provide personalised, minimally invasive treatment.

He has a particular interest in gallstones and complex biliary disease, including biliary colic, acute and chronic cholecystitis, gallstone pancreatitis and common bile duct stones. He performs laparoscopic and robotic gallbladder surgery, intraoperative cholangiography and common bile duct exploration. In appropriately selected patients, gallbladder and bile duct stones can be treated during the same operation using a single-stage approach.

Mr Fehervari also specialises in acid reflux, laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and hiatus hernia. He offers comprehensive investigation including gastroscopy, Bravo™ wireless pH capsule monitoring, pH-impedance testing and high-resolution oesophageal manometry. Treatment options include LINX® magnetic sphincter augmentation, laparoscopic and robotic fundoplication, hiatus hernia repair and revisional anti-reflux surgery. He also assesses patients with swallowing difficulties, dyspepsia, upper abdominal pain, bloating and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

Bariatric and metabolic surgery forms a major part of his practice. He offers Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG), gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and revisional bariatric surgery, as well as assessment and management of weight regain following previous bariatric surgery. Mr Fehervari established the ESG service within his NHS practice, developing the clinical pathway and introducing this minimally invasive, incision-free approach to weight loss.

He also has a particular interest in gastrointestinal and surgical problems associated with modern weight-loss medications, including GLP-1 and GIP therapies such as Mounjaro®. This includes gallstones, gallbladder inflammation, bile duct stones, gallstone pancreatitis, reflux and other gastrointestinal symptoms associated with medical or rapid weight loss.

His practice additionally includes laparoscopic and robotic repair of inguinal, umbilical, epigastric and incisional hernias. Robotic surgery is used selectively across his Upper GI, bariatric, reflux, gallbladder and hernia practice where it offers an appropriate minimally invasive approach.

Alongside his clinical work, Mr Fehervari has a strong academic and educational background. He holds two Master's degrees and a PhD and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, with over 4,500 citations. His research has received multiple national awards, and he is ranked among the top 1% of the world's most highly cited scientists.

He is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Imperial College London, Clinical Lecturer and Year 5 Surgery Lead at Kent & Medway Medical School, Acute Care Block Lead for King's Medical School, and Clinical Lead for the South East Endoscopy Training Hub. He received the Teaching Excellence Award in 2025, and his NHS leadership experience has included serving as Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Lead.
