Mr. John Terrace is a Consultant Surgeon with a wealth of experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, based at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in 2001 and went on to complete extensive training in general surgery in Edinburgh, including earning a PhD. His surgical training covered a broad spectrum of general and specialised procedures, culminating in a specialty fellowship at Guy’s Hospital, London.
During his training, Mr. Terrace gained valuable expertise under the mentorship of nationally and internationally renowned surgeons, particularly in advanced laparoscopic hernia and gallbladder surgery. He also developed a special interest in laparoscopic adrenal surgery, which remains a key part of his practice today.
Appointed as a Consultant Surgeon in 2015, Mr. Terrace has a specialist practice in laparoscopic surgery. He has substantial experience in performing hernia surgeries of all types, as well as gallbladder and gallstone surgeries. As the dedicated adrenal surgeon for the South-East of Scotland, he leads the NHS service in this area. Additionally, he is one of only two surgeons in the East of Scotland qualified to perform laparoscopic living donor kidney surgeries as part of the kidney transplantation program.
Mr. Terrace is a committed member of the British Hernia Society, promoting high standards in hernia surgery, and the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, representing excellence in adrenal surgery. His passion for education is evident in his active role in mentoring and training the next generation of surgeons. He provides clinical supervision and mentorship to surgical registrars and teaches medical undergraduates, fostering the development of future leaders in the field.
In his practice, Mr. Terrace prioritises patient-centred care, emphasising safety, effectiveness, and a comprehensive approach to treatment. He believes in creating a personalised and open environment where communication and trust are key, ensuring that patients feel well-supported throughout their care journey.
