About Mr Michael Hughes

Mr. Michael Hughes is a Consultant General and Hepatobiliary (HPB) Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, with a focus on abdominal pain, hernia and gallbladder surgery, as well as minimally invasive liver and pancreas surgery. He graduated from the University of Aberdeen and completed his training in Edinburgh and South East Scotland. In addition to his clinical role, Mr. Hughes also has a fellowship in minimally invasive liver and pancreas surgery, which he pursued in Oslo before returning to Edinburgh to take up his consultant post in 2020.

I had been experiencing issues for almost two years, having many tests but no real diagnosis, when I arranged my first consultation with Mr Hughes. I found him to be very approachable and professional, and he was able to reassure me and pinpoint the likely source of the issues at that consultation. An MRI was booked, however events overtook the timing of this and my local ED found my gallbladder to be the problem, confirming Mr Hughes's initial thoughts. By this time, some of the atypical symptoms presenting were severely impacting my life, and Mr Hughes made a huge effort to fit me in for surgery earlier than his schedule would usually allow. For this compassion, I am incredibly grateful. The surgery was breeze, the incision sites are tiny faint lines that I expect to heal to invisibility and the procedure gave immediate relief from the pain that has been life changing. I will have no hesitation in arranging a consultation again should I be unfortunate enough to suffer further gastric/abdominal issues.

Michael was professional, warm and made me feel comfortable and in safe hands immediately. He answered all my questions and I am grateful for the skill and care I received pre, during and post surgery. My scars are very neat and smaller than I expected too. Surgery couldn't have gone any better.

My experience of my dealing with Mr Hughes was of a person who was considerate and totally professional in his work. He was easy to talk to, had a relaxed manner and was fully focused on providing the correct outcome for my medical problem. After examining me Mr Hughes explained the benefits of the surgery being carried out and thought that proceeding with an operation was reasonable. He discussed with me the risks associated with surgery and anaesthesia and also with regard to my history of deep vein thrombosis. On the day of my operation he met me along with the anaesthetist and provided assurance of the procedure to be undertaken. Afterwards he visited me in my room and assured me that all had gone well and advised on the rehabilitation that I should follow.
