I am a consultant anaesthetist with many years of experience in the NHS. I was appointed initially in a large University Hospital, where I worked in "high-profile" specialties such as neurosurgery and intensive care medicine. For lifestyle and family reasons we moved to Somerset where I became director of a small intensive care unit. In parallel I continued to anaesthetise for elective and emergency surgical cases. Other than clinical medicine, I would teach and direct professional life support and critical illness courses, work for the Royal College, and tutor resident anaesthetists. Although I have an MD from Dusseldorf University, I have only occasionally carried out research projects. I have now retired from the NHS but do not want to waste my skills which took many years to develop.
I have an interest in peripheral nerve blocks. Some 15 years ago I adopted ultrasound-guided techniques and am happy to administer those in the context of surgery, for the purpose of post-operative pain relief or as sole anaesthetic. Ask me about those!
