Dr Hugh Paterson

Dr Hugh Paterson is an experienced Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and General Surgeon who is dedicated to delivering high-quality, reassuring surgical care to his patients. Specialising in general surgical procedures and complex coloproctology, he provides comprehensive diagnostic and operative management for a wide variety of abdominal conditions. Dr Paterson is committed to utilising modern surgical techniques to support patient recovery and improve overall treatment outcomes.

Dr Paterson completed his undergraduate medical education in 1994, graduating with a Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci) and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB). He subsequently completed basic surgical training alongside dedicated research into post-injury immune responses, earning a Doctor of Medicine (MD) postgraduate degree in 2003. Following higher surgical training, he undertook an international fellowship specialising in advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in General Surgery (FRCS GenSurg).

Throughout his career as a General Surgeon, Dr Paterson has maintained a strong focus on minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic techniques for bowel disorders. His clinical work encompasses the surgical management of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, abdominal hernias, and emergency surgical conditions. In addition to his surgical practice, he serves as a Clinical Senior Lecturer and leads clinical trials aimed at enhancing perioperative care and post-operative recovery.
