Mr George Cooper is an experienced specialist in the treatment of patients suffering with hip and knee problems. He is an expert in joint replacement and performs a high number of joint replacement operations annually, using a number of modern techniques - each specifically tailored to the individual needs of the patient. This includes patient specific implants and robotic assisted surgery. This enables him to maximise the functional outcome and restore movement according to each patients' need.
Mr Cooper holds his NHS appointment at the world renowned Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and was appointed as a consultant surgeon in 2018. Prior to this he completed the advanced hip surgery fellowship at The Avon Orthopaedic Centre as well as undertaking subspecialist knee fellowship training at the University Hospital Birmingham and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
Mr Cooper has a specialist practice in complex hip and knee replacement as well as revision ("redo") hip and knee replacement, which can require extensive reconstruction and an extended team to manage more complex issues such as mechanical failure or infection. He has a keen research interest to improve the outcome of first time and revision joint replacements and has published papers on joint replacement surgery as well as presenting research studies on the national and international stage.
Mr Cooper obtained the fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (trauma and orthopaedics) certification in 2016, and he is an Honorary Lecturer at The University of Birmingham. He is actively involved in education of medical students and other surgeons and concentrates this on hip and knee surgery where possible! One specific role is as the research lead at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital for a national research trial assessing the use of an optimised dynamic hip replacement technique, which allows precise positioning according the dynamic anatomical parameters of each patient.
Mr Cooper has "retired" from rugby to a spectator role after completing his primary medical qualification in 2007, and he enjoys spending time with his wife and three boys when not at work.
