Professor Michael Lunn

Professor Michael Lunn is a highly experienced consultant neurologist and Professor of Clinical Neurology, as well as Clinical Lead in Neuroimmunology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London. He provides expert care across the full spectrum of general neurology, supporting patients with a wide range of neurological conditions.

As a leading neurologist, Professor Lunn has a particular focus on disorders affecting the peripheral nerves and neuromuscular system. His specialist expertise includes inflammatory peripheral nerve diseases, immune‑mediated neuropathies, and neurological complications associated with haematological conditions. While he welcomes patients with all neurological concerns, his clinical practice increasingly centres on complex nerve disorders.

Professor Lunn’s clinical and research interests cover all types of neuropathy, especially those related to the immune system and cancer. He also has a strong interest in general neurology and neuromuscular conditions, ensuring a comprehensive and holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment.

He runs specialist outpatient clinics as part of the Peripheral Nerve Service within the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Diseases. These clinics provide multidisciplinary care for patients with inflammatory neuropathies, involving close collaboration with haematology, neurophysiology experts and specialist nursing teams. This integrated approach ensures that patients receive coordinated, personalised care from leading experts in neurology.

Together with Dr Shirley D’Sa at UCLH, Professor Lunn leads the UK’s only dedicated POEMS syndrome service, offering highly specialised assessment and management for this rare condition.

In addition to his clinical work, Professor Lunn directs the Neuroimmunology and CSF Laboratory (NICL), a nationally recognised facility providing advanced diagnostic testing. The laboratory performs specialised analyses of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood and other samples to support the diagnosis of complex neurological diseases. This includes testing for antibodies, biomarkers and cellular indicators of neurological conditions. The NICL is fully accredited to ISO15189 standards by UKAS, ensuring the highest quality and reliability.
