Dr. Kevin Shields is a Consultant Neurologist with a particular focus on the diagnosis and management of headache disorders. He holds appointments at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square and the Whittington Hospital, where he delivers expert care across a broad spectrum of neurological conditions. One of the few neurologists also qualified in neurophysiology, Dr. Shields brings a rare dual expertise to his practice, enabling him to apply advanced diagnostic techniques in the study of the nervous system’s electrical activity.
Dr. Shields graduated first in his class from Trinity College, Dublin in 1997, earning the prestigious Hudson Gold Medal. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 1999 before moving to London to pursue neurology training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. During this time, he worked under the mentorship of Professor Peter J. Goadsby, a world-leading authority in the field of headache disorders. His commitment to advancing neurological research led him to complete a PhD at the University of London in 2005, focusing on the mechanisms of pain transmission in headache. His work earned him the Sir Charles Symonds Prize from the Association of British Neurologists and the Lord Adrian Prize from the British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology.
In his clinical role, Dr. Shields combines cutting-edge research with compassionate, patient-centred care. While his primary subspecialty is in headache medicine, he has extensive experience managing a wide range of neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis, mirroring his broad practice within the NHS.

I was running late for my appointment (this had been communicated to Dr Kevin’s PA) . Despite this, Dr Kevin refused to see me. I completely understand the importance of arriving on time for appointments but I found the way the situation was handled disappointing and unnecessarily rude. As someone who is recently postpartum and caring for a young baby at home, I found Dr Shields reaction incredibly insensitive and upsetting. Overall the situation could have been handled with far more understanding, empathy and professionalism.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review and giving me an opportunity to respond. I always aim to provide the highest quality of care in in a calm and reassuring atmosphere and I am sorry that you feel this situation was handled in a manner which caused you unnecessary upset. Unfortunately, as you were advised on the day of the clinic, a neurological consultation (including the taking of a detailed history and thorough examination) requires a minimum amount of time, and as you replied with only 10 minutes of your appointment remaining, there was simply not enough time for me to perform an adequate assessment while maintaining the high standard of care I always strive to deliver. As well as the need to undertake a thorough examination, I am also conscious that a rushed consultation with limited time for questions can cause unnecessary stress and angst for the patient. As this was a full clinic and other patients (who rightly expect to be seen promptly) had already arrived, I was unable to accommodate you at the time of your arrival, but I do note that you were offered the option of an appointment that day at the end of the clinic, or the opportunity to reschedule. I always try to accommodate my patients and I am sorry you declined both of these two alternatives. I wish you the best and should you be in need of neurological advice in future I would be more than happy to accommodate you.
Dr Shields has a lovely, soft Irish accent. My only problem was that, having slight hearing loss, I could not hear him when he spoke quietly. But that really is my problem, not his. When I explained he spoke up. It's partly my fault - I should have won my hearing aid. Otherwise Dr Shields was great, really informative, reassuring and his explanations wonderfully lucid. John A. PS in text section none of choices match my issue. I put Nerve Block as nearest but its probably wrong
Dr Shields’ examination was very thorough, he took his time to understand my concerns and put my mind at ease. I received very useful advice and information on many aspects from Dr Shields during my initial consultation which helped shed light on my concerns.
Outstanding care, true attention to detail, superb, calming manner; I honestly could not reccomend Dr Sheilds any Higher! 🙏
Dr Shields was both professional and empathatic, caring and took the time to explain things clearly
Dr Shields was professional yet friendly and put me at ease. I felt that there was nothing I couldn’t ask and his explanations were easy to understand without being condescending. He is a lovely gentleman and I was extremely happy with my experience.
Dr Shields is a professional physician. It is always a pleasure to share patients with him. He gives excellent clear advice. Patients enjoy seeing him.
