Dr Aran Singanayagam is a highly experienced and skilled Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. His clinical expertise and interests include asthma, bronchiectasis, respiratory infections, post-COVID19 respiratory disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and general respiratory disease.

Dr Singanayagam completed his medical training at the University of Edinburgh in 2005 with distinction and a First class intercalated BSc in Physiology. He trained as a respiratory doctor within North West London, primarily at St Mary's, Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals.

His strong interest in respiratory infections and airway diseases led to a Wellcome Trust clinical research PhD training fellowship in 2011-2014. This work focused on studying the effects of inhaled corticosteroids – commonly used therapies for these conditions – on the immune response of the lungs to viral and bacterial infections. Dr Singanayagam was recognised for this important work with the British Thoracic Society investigator award in 2015, and his findings were published in the high-impact journals Nature Communications and Science Translational Medicine. In 2020, Dr Singanayagam was awarded a prestigious Clinician Scientist Fellowship from the Medical Research Council. This allowed him to establish an independent research group alongside working clinically as a respiratory consultant. 

Dr Singanayagam has published over 100 papers on airways diseases (asthma and COPD), lung infections and post-COVID lung disease. He provides supervision for MSc and PhD students (clinical and non-clinical) completing research. He is on the Editorial Board for the European Respiratory Journal and has presented his research at conferences nationally and internationally.
