Dr Thomas Barber is a highly accomplished Consultant Neurologist who specialises in the diagnosis and management of complex neurological conditions. With a primary clinical focus on movement disorders, he runs dedicated specialist clinics for patients experiencing a range of motor symptoms. Dr Barber is particularly interested in Parkinson's disease, atypical Parkinsonian disorders, and the therapeutic administration of botulinum toxin to manage movement disorders. In addition to his specialist clinics, he manages both inpatients and outpatients presenting with a broad spectrum of general neurological disorders, ensuring comprehensive and reassuring care for his patients.
Dr Barber began his medical journey at Clare College, University of Cambridge, before completing his medical degree at Barts and The London School of Medicine. He subsequently undertook his postgraduate neurology training through the prestigious National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) clinical academic scheme in Oxford. Demonstrating a strong commitment to academic excellence, he went on to obtain a DPhil in Biomedical and Clinical Sciences from Brasenose College, University of Oxford. His doctoral research focused on investigating the clinical and neuroimaging characteristics of prodromal neurodegeneration in patients with REM sleep behaviour disorder.
Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Barber is actively involved in pioneering neurological research. His academic work primarily focuses on characterising the prodromal phase of Parkinson's disease, and he has published numerous peer-reviewed papers in this field. He is interested in the neuropsychiatric aspects of early-stage disease and the development of novel neuroimaging biomarkers to detect neurodegeneration at its earliest stages. Dr Barber is also engaged in clinical trials evaluating innovative therapeutic agents for Parkinson's disease and is an active member of the Edmund J Safra ACT-PD Consortium (Accelerating Clinical Trials in Parkinson's Disease). His research contributions have been recognised and supported by fellowship awards from the Wellcome Trust and the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre.
