Evidence Based Care with a Personal Touch
Dr Young is a highly accredited consultant ophthalmic surgeon specialising in cataract and glaucoma, including laser and surgical treatments. Dr Young is a substantive consultant with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde where her NHS practice is based at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and New Victoria Hospital.
Dr Young is the only consultant eye surgeon in Scotland to have completed Fellowship at the world renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital in complex glaucoma and paediatric glaucoma, which makes her the top choice for patients seeking assessment or treatment for glaucoma/ ocular hypertension. She is one of the most experienced surgeons in Scotland proficient in a wide range of Modern Glaucoma Surgery ( including Preserflo, Istent, Hydrus, OMNI), which provides faster recovery than traditional glaucoma surgery and enables her to tailor treatment for the individual patient.
An experienced cataract surgeon with a complication rate well under average for the UK (under 0.5% vs UK average 2-3%), Dr Young is also one of a handful surgeons in Scotland to hold the Certificate in Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists which assures patients of her high standards for premium cataract surgery.
Dr Young is highly commended by her patients for her caring and informed approach for each individual patient.
Dr Young qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh, and undertook 7 years of ophthalmic specialty training at the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion in Edinburgh, including a year of advanced fellowship in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Following this she undertook a 2nd advanced surgical glaucoma fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, the biggest eye hospital in Europe and one of the best ophthalmic centres in the world. Here, she spent a year refining her skills in the management of complex adult and paediatric glaucoma under the mentorship of Prof Sir Peng Khaw who founded the world recognised Moorfields Safer Surgery System which has transformed modern glaucoma surgery.
Passionate about teaching and training the next generation of ophthalmologists in her NHS consultant role with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, Dr Young is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow and also an examiner for the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK).
A Good Clinical Practice registered researcher, she has published research in international journals and has been invited to speak at numerous international and national conferences. She holds a committee post with the UK Paediatric Glaucoma Society and is a member of the UK and Eire Glaucoma Society.
In her spare time, she conducts journal reviews of the latest publications in ophthalmology for Eye News, a bimonthly eye magazine targeted at ophthalmic professionals.
