Professor Richard Field is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in hip-related issues. He is the UK's most experienced surgeon in direct anterior hip replacement and has used this minimally invasive, muscle-sparing technique for more than 3000 patients. He uses both the standard longitudinal and the less visible bikini incisions as needed. Prof. Field has extensive experience in complex sports and developmental hip problems, and he is regarded as a world leader in hip preservation and rapid recovery hip replacement surgery. He lectures internationally and performs more than 200 hip operations each year. He has also previously worked as an advisor for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
Prof. Field undertook his medical training at Westminster Hospital in 1980 before working at a number of London hospitals, including The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and University College Hospital. He went on to complete a PhD at Cambridge University and undertook specialist orthopaedic training in the UK and Australia. He is a professor of Orthopaedic surgery at St George's University of London and was director of research at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC) from 2004-21. His private practice is primarily at The Lister Hospital in Chelsea.
Prof. Field is a pioneer of arthroscopic hip surgery and has undertaken hip resurfacing since 1995. He served as the president of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy, 2016-17, and has been involved in the design and evaluation of novel implant designs since 1983. He is currently conducting clinical research on short femoral stem implants as well as some of the newer hip resurfacing designs. Where appropriate, he uses robotic-assisted surgery to achieve optimal component alignment. (Patients who want to be considered for novel implant studies may need to be treated at SWLEOC).

Professor Richard Field consistently provides kind, clear, and professional consultations, making patients feel at ease. Patients highlight Professor Field's expert explanations of hip replacement procedures, particularly the anterior approach, which leads to fast recovery and minimal pain. The care extends through detailed pre-operative information, successful surgery outcomes, and supportive post-operative follow-up. Patient experiences consistently praise excellent results regarding their hip replacement surgery, especially with the anterior approach.
The whole experience around my hip replacement by Professor Field was extremely positive. From pre-assessment through the procedure and up to rehab I have been totally impressed with the levels of engagement and professionalism. The entire experience far exceeded my expectations and I am very happy with the outcomes.
My experience of having a hip replacement was a very happy one. I was very well looked after by everyone. I was also lucky to experience virtually no pain, just ache.
I found Professor Field easy to understand, he talked me through each process of the operation and what would happen before and after the procedure. He has an easy and fabulous bedside manner, sometimes hard to find with medical professionals. He gave me each stage of the proceedings in laymen’s terms. He came to see me a couple of times when I was back in my room and called me a couple of times once home. I felt totally looked after. Nothing was overlooked.
My visit / operation with Professor Field couldn’t have been smoother and all done with compassion and understanding of my situation. Also the most kindest Dr Hussain who “held my hand” The aftercare has been second to none by every single person at St Anthony’s. Cheam. The physio which I have been hoping to have nearer to my home hasn’t been as good. Awkwardness, lack of care on arrangement which I am hoping doesn’t hinder my recovery ! Thank you to all concerned especially Prof Field for giving me my life back.
Professor Field explained to me that he no longer did knee surgery and suggested l see Mr Bobby Anand as would be able to help which l have done so
Very clear and helpful advice. it was a pleasure to meet with Mr Field again.
Professor Field was extremely kind and patient. His gentle manner and clear explanation was reassuring. I would not hesitate in recommending him.
Extremely clear in language that a lay person can understand and explains the different procedures for hip replacement. I knew him to be one of the leading professors/surgeons in the world on this subject and it is easy to see why but I now know exactly what my problem is and how to proceed.
Richard Field is a remarkable surgeon with impeccable manners. I’m privileged to have known Richard professionally for almost 2 decades, and always impressed with his quest for excellence. Ali Bajwa
