About Professor Gordon Mackay

Professor Gordon MacKay is world-leading sports surgeon and known within the medical and sports community as the inventor of the Internal Brace. Based in Scotland at the Kings Park Hospital, Stirling and Ross Hall Hospital, Glasgow. Gordon has worked extensively with the Scottish Rugby Union, Rangers and Celtic football clubs, Scotland's Olympians via his close relationship with Scottish Institute of Sport. He was the official doctor for the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles and for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Professor MacKay previously played football professionally and was briefly a reserve player for Rangers Football Club. His playing career was unfortunately abandoned when he damaged his own knees and has since dedicated his career to improving outcomes for sportspeople who experience injuries. Since graduating from Glasgow University in 1987, Gordon has enjoyed a highly successful career spanning over 30 years. He has completed sports surgery training at some of the world's leading sports surgery clinics, including Sydney, Adelaide and Sweden. He has now been Scotland's only full time sports surgeon for over 10 years.

In 2009 he was appointed Honorary Professor in the School of Sport at Stirling University. Gordon currently works with top North American and European centres focusing on ligament repair and accelerated recovery. His invention of the Internal Brace has changed the way damaged ligaments and tendons are treated, with athletes returning to competitive sport within 6 to 8 weeks of injury (previously 6 to 9 months). He has operated on over 100 professional sportspeople, elite athletes and Olympians.
