About Mr Niten Vig

Mr Vig is a double fellowship-trained Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, with subspecialty expertise in bespoke cataract surgery, glaucoma diagnosis and management, laser treatment and glaucoma surgery. His NHS practice runs from the Western Eye Hospital in Marylebone, London.

He undertook his undergraduate medical degree at Oxford University, obtaining an additional Masters degree in physiology and winning several prizes during his studies. He initially trained in internal medicine, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians, before winning a place on the prestigious North Thames (Moorfields) 7-year ophthalmology rotation. After becoming a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2017, Mr Vig decided to pursue glaucoma and cataract as his subspecialty interest and completed fellowships at Moorfields and then the Western Eye Hospital. This training, with world leading glaucoma and cataract experts, underpins his approach to the complex/tertiary level patients he sees in his current practice. He also has extensive emergency/general ophthalmology experience and works as a consultant in the Western Eye A&E department.

Mr Vig is committed to the education and training of the next generation of eye care specialists. He supervises medical students, BSc students, trainee surgeons and optometrists and has lectured on the UCL Ophthalmology MSc. He was twice awarded Teacher of the Month for Oxford University Medical School and worked with the General Medical Council for nearly 20 years, reviewing medical schools across the UK. He advocates and advises on patient safety, having served as the Quality and Safety lead for ophthalmology at Imperial. He is actively involved in clinical research and has presented at national and international conferences and published in peer reviewed journals. Current research focuses include outcomes after newer surgical devices and laser treatments. He is a regular invited speaker at industry-led events.

Current areas of practice:
Cataract surgery with premium lenses, clear lens removal, YAG laser
Glaucoma diagnosis and treatment, including second opinions
Glaucoma laser, surgery including minimally invasive stents, trabeculectomy, aqueous shunts, Preserflo, revision surgery

Mr Vig has a very nice and kind manner, which I have experienced seeing him both as an NHS and private patient. He carried out surgery on my right eye to remove a cataract and insert stents for glaucoma, and it was painless with minimal discomfort. Three days on and my eye feels completely fine, just slightly red, with no need for pain relief. I highly recommend him.

Mr Vig explain the procedure to me and answered all of my questions very clearly. He explained what to expect during the laser treatment and checked regularly while he was doing it to make sure that I was comfortable and okay. He put me totally at my ease and was very friendly.

The last couple of years have been a journey but on meeting Mr Vig for the first time I was immediately put at ease by his calm manner. I have always felt confidant with the information he has given me for my care including the benefits and any risks. I know that any decisions were carried out with the full knowledge that he was going to do the best he could for me. I have always felt looked after and cannot say thank you enough for the positive outcome I have had with his care and that of his team

Excellent. I found Mr Vig to be an excellent surgeon. I had my cataracts done plus acute angle glaucoma. He explained everything prior to surgery, phoned to check the morning after my first surgery. All my emails regarding my progress were replied to immediately with appropriate advice. The lenses selected are very good. My eyesight is perfect apart from reading glasses for small print. Highly recommended surgeon.
