Mr Yogesh Kumar is a consultant upper GI surgeon at the Sandwell Hospital in West Birmingham. His initial medical qualifications and surgical training were completed in India with further advanced surgical training in various hospitals in Yorkshire. Here he developed an interest and expertise in keyhole operations for gallstone problems and abdominal wall repairs. He consolidated this with a year of training in an established UGI cancer and Bariatric unit at Castle Hill Hospital, Cottingham, Hull before gaining his specialist GMC registration. He then spent two years of his surgical career specialising in the field of pancreatic cancer and has since performed over 500 laparoscopic cholecystectomies, and over 150 laparoscopic inguinal and abdominal wall hernia repairs.
Mr. Kumar currently serves as an educational and clinical supervisor to the speciality registrars and foundation year doctors. His main areas of clinical interest include acid reflux disease and hiatus hernia. He has an interest in academic research, having published around thirteen articles in peer-reviewed academic journals and has presented his research work in various conferences at national and international level.
He is a member of the British Hernia Society, the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and the Benign Upper GI Surgical Society.
A keen linguist and meditation practitioner, in his spare time Mr. Kumar also enjoys walking, cricket and reading science fiction.
