About

Professor Philip Chapman-Sheath is one of the UK's most experienced knee surgeons and has a worldwide reputation for excellence in knee surgery. He is also a visiting Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton working and researching in the Novel Devices team in the Department of Computing and Electronic Sciences and regularly teaches complex surgical knee techniques to fellow specialist consultant knee surgeons on highly advanced technques - in both the UK and widely across the globe.

Due to this international reputation, Philip performs four times more revision knee surgeries than the national average and more than twice as many primary knee replacements annually. His published outcomes for all primary and revision knee replacements remain consistently above the national average. His outcomes for partial knee resurfacing and specialised patellofemoral replacement are both well above the national average.

Philip is highly recommended - as one of the UKs best knee surgeons in the 2018 Daily Mail 'Good Doctors Guide '

Philip has an additional specialised practice in the management and prevention of sporting injuries for both adults and children and works closely alongside leading sporting clubs and schools across the South of England, in particular covering Southampton, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and the Channel Islands.

Philip has established a unique specialist private centre for the management and treatment of adolescent paediatric knee injuries and the consequences of any developmental conditions. Based at the foremost private hospital in Southampton, the centre is fortunate in having dedicated paediatric nursing staff and a state-of-the-art ward with specialist paediatric allied health practitioners and dedicated paediatric theatre lists using only the best highly trained paediatric consultant anaesthetists. The centre provides the highest standard of care and attention to detail for all paediatric patients – helping both them and their families to understand their condition, ask questions and feel completely at ease.

Professor Chapman-Sheath consults and treats elite and club athletes and sports persons from many regional sporting clubs and disciplines and also maintains a personal interest treating high level military personnel referred directly to him from all corners of the UK - using unique interpersonal skills which help to understand their 'sporting drive and commitment' ensuring a rapid return to their best performance ; drawing on his personal international level sports experience gained whilst representing both Great Britain & England in the discipline of Target Rifle Shooting, combined with specialist academic knowledge and techniques learnt whilst undertaking his additional undergraduate degree in the study of Psychology.

Philip is affiliated to/is a member of: the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), British Association for Surgery of Knee (BASK), American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), European Knee Society (EKS), European Society of Knee and Sports Surgery (ESSKA), European Federation of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT), International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) and the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS).
