About Mr Toby Baring
Mr Toby Baring is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery.
Mr Baring studied at Newcastle University and qualified in 2000. He passed the FRCS in 2012. Following his initial training, he undertook a doctorate at Imperial College London with Professor Roger Emery in 2006, focusing on rotator cuff surgery. He undertook his specialist orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital rotation in North London.
Mr Baring spent his Fellowship year in Nice, France, working under Professor Pascal Boileau and on his return from France, he was appointed as a NHS Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant in 2015, now based at Imperial College NHS trust.
Mr Baring's areas of expertise are shoulder arthroscopy and joint replacement, and shoulder and elbow trauma. He employs modern techniques to provide the best possible outcomes from surgery and performs 300-400 procedures per year.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Baring is active in both research and training. He is regularly invited to speak at national and international congresses, and to perform complex operations which are broadcast live to conference audiences. He trains surgeons from around the globe in innovative shoulder procedures and has published papers on shoulder instability, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder joint replacement and elbow fractures.
Mr Baring understands that upper limb problems can be extremely disabling and can have a severe impact on quality of life. He will take time to understand patients' conditions on a case by case basis, tailoring treatment to the individual to address their needs and concerns. His objective is to always treat and cure without surgery and only advises operative intervention when absolutely necessary.

I contacted Toby to review my arm and shoulder after a recent cycle incident and treatment to fix a clavicle with multiple fractures in Spain. I immediately thought of Toby when I realized I felt the need for a specialist review when I was back in the UK and was seen within a day of my return. I feel reassured to know I’ll be under their care for the rest of my recovery.
I had an excellent experience throughout. Communication before and after my surgery was great, and everything was explained clearly so I always understood what to expect. Any questions or concerns I had were responded to quickly and thoroughly. Most importantly, I genuinely felt that he cared about me as a patient and took the time to listen, which gave me a lot of confidence and reassurance throughout the process. Professional, approachable and caring — I would highly recommend him.
Very efficient diagnosis and treatment suggestion. The suggested conservative treatment has worked extremely well so far and I am very pleased with the outcome at this point.
Consummate professional explained everything in a way I could understand and put you at ease from the minute you walked in, kind of like when you hear that pilots voice on the PA when you are waiting to take off, you know it's all going to be OK

He explains anatomy, the causes of your pain and all the treatment options carefully, and in simple terms that leave you feeling confident that you are able to fully assess the choices available to you. Additionally, his wonderful secretary Meryl is a model of efficiency, folowing up with letters and appointments speedily.
