About Mr Toby Baring

Mr Toby Baring is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Mr Baring studied at Newcastle University and qualified in 2000. He passed the FRCS in 2012. Following his initial training, he undertook a doctorate at Imperial College London with Professor Roger Emery in 2006, focusing on rotator cuff surgery. He undertook his specialist orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital rotation in North London.

Mr Baring spent his Fellowship year in Nice, France, working under Professor Pascal Boileau and on his return from France, he was appointed as a NHS Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant in 2015, now based at Imperial College NHS trust.

Mr Baring's areas of expertise are shoulder arthroscopy and joint replacement, and shoulder and elbow trauma. He employs modern techniques to provide the best possible outcomes from surgery and performs 300-400 procedures per year.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Baring is active in both research and training. He is regularly invited to speak at national and international congresses, and to perform complex operations which are broadcast live to conference audiences. He trains surgeons from around the globe in innovative shoulder procedures and has published papers on shoulder instability, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder joint replacement and elbow fractures.

Mr Baring understands that upper limb problems can be extremely disabling and can have a severe impact on quality of life. He will take time to understand patients' conditions on a case by case basis, tailoring treatment to the individual to address their needs and concerns. His objective is to always treat and cure without surgery and only advises operative intervention when absolutely necessary.

He examined my shoulder injury thoroughly and was very passionate throughout. He gave me a steroid injection there and then and also guided for the future treatment strategy. Mr Toby Baring is very kind and has a very friendly approach.

Our daughter was involved in an accident resulting in a “Proximus Humerus Fracture” (broken arm near the shoulder joint). We found Dr Toby Baring, having searched Orthopaedic consultants who specialises in “trauma” injuries to the “upper limb/shoulder” based in North London with a range of availabilities through the week. Dr Toby proved to be a great find – he clearly and calmly answered all our questions drawing on extensive specialist knowledge and experience. This experience and knowledge was used in follow-up consultations, post x-ray, to improve our understanding of the progress of the recovery and provide information and reassurance about the path to full recovery for our daughter. Dr Toby also helped to find high quality physiotherapy nearby. We would thoroughly recommend Dr Toby Baring.

After fracturing my shoulder, I was determined to be ready for a skiing holiday just a few weeks later. Dr Baring provided a professional assessment along with efficient care and a reassuring personal approach. With his help, and a referral to an excellent physiotherapist, I was able to go on my skiing holiday and enjoy it. I highly recommend him.

I cannot speak highly enough of the care I received from Toby during a very difficult time. For years, I struggled with persistent shoulder pain and I then slipped disc in my neck, which not only affected me physically but also affected my work. From the very beginning, his professionalism and depth of knowledge gave me complete confidence in his care. He was also able to act quickly and decisively when it mattered. His prompt diagnosis and treatment plan made a real difference in my recovery. I am incredibly grateful and would wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone.

My 2 visits to Mr Baring were on a firm recommendation by the family of another of his patients. My visits were preliminary, to assess the state of a shoulder and to recommend a course of action. The advice I received was considered, attentive, realistic and there was good communication.
