About Mr Toby Baring

Mr Toby Baring is a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon specialising in shoulder and elbow surgery.

Mr Baring studied at Newcastle University and qualified in 2000. He passed the FRCS in 2012. Following his initial training, he undertook a doctorate at Imperial College London with Professor Roger Emery in 2006, focusing on rotator cuff surgery. He undertook his specialist orthopaedic training on the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital rotation in North London.

Mr Baring spent his Fellowship year in Nice, France, working under Professor Pascal Boileau and on his return from France, he was appointed as a NHS Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultant in 2015, now based at Imperial College NHS trust.

Mr Baring's areas of expertise are shoulder arthroscopy and joint replacement, and shoulder and elbow trauma. He employs modern techniques to provide the best possible outcomes from surgery and performs 300-400 procedures per year.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr Baring is active in both research and training. He is regularly invited to speak at national and international congresses, and to perform complex operations which are broadcast live to conference audiences. He trains surgeons from around the globe in innovative shoulder procedures and has published papers on shoulder instability, rotator cuff injuries, shoulder joint replacement and elbow fractures.

Mr Baring understands that upper limb problems can be extremely disabling and can have a severe impact on quality of life. He will take time to understand patients' conditions on a case by case basis, tailoring treatment to the individual to address their needs and concerns. His objective is to always treat and cure without surgery and only advises operative intervention when absolutely necessary.

I had the very great pleasure of dealing with Mr Baring, who operated on my broken collar bone back in April 2026. Sadly, I seem to be 'collecting' operations at an alarming rate, and so I have lots of recent experience of the medical profession, and I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Mr Baring and his team to anyone requiring shoulder related surgery. My surgery required an operation urgent and Meryl (Medical Secretary) was brilliant in bringing everything together for me in an incredibly effective and professional way. Awesome work everyone. Thanks Simon

Experience with Mr Baring was very good, to the point and very well explained, taking the time to answer all questions, available via email if queries are needed. Very quick response from him as well as his assistant Meryl. He took the time to thoroughly explain my shoulder injury diagnosis and the proposed treatment in a clear and understandable way. Front-to-back experience from initial consultation through to scans, diagnosis and treatment was efficient, knowledgeable, professional and re-assuring throughout. You do feel looked after. Very positive experience and would definitely recommend Mr Baring.

I went to Dr Baring for a elbow triad injury (serious enough for me to think surgery is required with serious side effects). My injury was such that I got varying opinions by different doctors leaning on surgery vs a more non surgical conservative approach. Dr Baring took the time to listen, understand my fears and suggested a conservative non surgical approach and he was very clear as to why. I liked his explanation and with Dr Baring I felt like I could trust to listen to his advise where as with the other doctors there was always confusion as to why they were saying what they said (Lack of trust, to pushy on their opinion etc).. I would highly recommended Dr Baring he was easy to speak to, understands his patients needs and explains things very clearly.
