Mr Tev Aho is a consultant urologist working in the NHS at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. He works pivately in Cambridge and at the Princess Grace Hospital in London. He specialises in treating men with bothersome urinary symptoms and catheter-dependent urinary retention due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). He is highly experienced at advising men who have BPH in order for them to feel comfortable in selecting the best treatment for their own personal situation. He offers a wide range of procedures in order to cater to any BPH scenario.
Mr Aho moved from New Zealand to the UK to become a Clinical Fellow in Uro-oncology at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge in 2003. The following year he was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon. He is the most experienced surgeon in the UK for performing Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP). He has performed more than 4,000 HoLEP procedures with outcomes amongst the best in the world and which have been published in the international urological literature. Other urologists often refer patients with complex prostate problems to Mr Aho for HoLEP surgery, including men whose prostates are too large for other prostate disobstructing procedures and those who have had previous prostate procedures that have failed such as TURP, Urolift, rezum, greenlight prostatectomy and prostate artery embolisation. As a specialist Benign Prostatic Obstruction (BPO) surgeon Mr Aho also offers other BPO procedures including Ejaculation-sparing HoLEP, Urolift, Rezum and Aquablation.. He has been offering HoLEP since 2002, Ejaculation-sparing HoLEP since 2006, Urolift since 2015 and Rezum since 2020. He was one of the first surgeons to introduce Aquablation to the UK in 2016.
Mr Aho has been heavily involved in BPH research for many years. He first became active in HoLEP research since the procedure's earliest days in New Zealand when he worked with the team who developed it . He introduced HoLEP to Cambridge in 2004, where it became and remains the treatment of choice for men seeking treatment for bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms and urinary retention.
Additionally, he commits a significant amount of his time to medical education. He lectures on HoLEP at national and international conferences and hosts an annual HoLEP course in Cambridge which has been held since 2005. He is also the founding president of the UK Holmium User Group (HUG) and has mentored many trainee doctors and consultant urologists in HoLEP since 2004.
Mr Aho was one of the first UK surgeons to perform Aquablation. He was an investigator for the first international randomised clinical trial assessing Aquablation (the WATER study) and continues to offer it as a treatment option for BPO.
Mr Aho's personal life is enriched with a wide range of interests including marathon running, wild swimming, military history, supporting the All Blacks rugby team, playing the cornet and trumpet and attending music festivals, the cinema and theatre.

Mr Tev Aho is friendly, professional, clear, and reassuring. He provides clear details on the HoLEP procedure. This includes expected results and side effects for benign prostatic hyperplasia. His expertise delivers better urinary flow and a better quality of life to patients.
From first consultation to final discharge the process was carried out with friendly approach and profound professionalism. Every step was explained with potential outcomes. The nursing care was exemplary. Overall a very straightforward procedure and thankfully a successful outcome.
After suffering for many years with what I now know was a restriction of my urethra due to the bladder neck applying pressure, I contacted David, Mr Aho's secretary. It was the best phone call I have made in decades! I was urinating up to 15 times daily,5 times during the night and I became totally exhausted due to lack of sleep. My quality of life was literally 1/10. I did my research and Tev Aho is the best in the world at Holep and it's not surprising as patients travel from USA and beyond for his expertise. Mr Aho removed part of my prostate and I opted for an ejaculating sparring method with a brilliant result! My prostate was also squeezing my bladder neck and this pressure was the cause of numerous toilet visits. After the operation I was left with an overactive bladder which was severe and within 3 months Mr Aho placed me on medication. This has been wonderful alongside the operation. My quality of life is now 9/10 . I go to the toilet roughly every 2-3 hours and my bladder can now hold a huge 600 ml ! During the night I go once, sometimes twice, but I'm confident this will improve to zero or once , after I complete this course of bladder calming medication. At 59 I am possibly one of the younger patients and I shouldn't have left my symptoms for the length I did. Mr Aho is a wonderful, caring and incredibly skilled surgeon. Don't even hesitate in contacting his pa, David. Thank you for everything you did for me Mr Aho. I am truly grateful. John B.
The overall experience was helped throughout by the demonstrable professionalism shown by all concerned.
I had my operation in September 2024 at Princess Grace hospital in London staying in hospital just one night. Be prepared to wake up with a catheter fitted and a blood coloured drainage bag. All in all it wasn't too bad an experience having worried about it for a few months but good to get it over. The nursing staff were excellent and Mr Aho was very reassuring. At Mr Aho's suggestion I stayed with my wife in a local hotel on the second night. I recommend buying the men’s paper pants from boots, they are quite discrete. It took about a year before I saw a significant improvement in the number of times I have to urinate. The urgency with which I urinate was a major problem and although that has improved it is still having an impact on my quality of life. I have recently contacted Mr Aho and he has prescribed medication for 4 months as he believes this is bladder related. I would recommend the operation to anyone with an enlarged prostrate
Any anxiety I may have held was quickly dispelled - from the Administrative Unit through to the Clinical Team every element was not only synchronised but exceptionally proficient. At a time when health care attracts a good deal of negative publicity, my experience was the complete opposite. It set the standard others would do well to follow.
My Helop operation was a complete success from the initial consultation with Mr Aho, who personally explained the full procedure and what occurs during and on completion of the Helop procedure, which was for me very reassuring and so helpful, everything went to plan and was virtuly pain free, the after care was also exstremely good, and i must stress my sincere thanks to all parties concerned.
The whole experience was excellent from start to finish and could not be faulted
The total experience was positive and supportive. Very reassuring
Dear Mr Aho I would like to put on record my satisfaction with the result of the HoLEP procedure you carried out for me recently. It has significantly improved the quality of my life. At 86, I had suffered for years from an over-large prostate. This meant a frequent need to pee both when out and about and during the night. I was increasingly conscious of the fact that my bladder was not emptying properly. I tried medication but it did not agree with me. The HoLEP procedure was carried out quickly and efficiently and my urine stream returned to normal. Some minor side effects soon cleared and I am sleeping much better. A successful outcome, many thanks! Regards Jeremy D.
Mr Tev Aho ; HoLeP Review ;October 2025 I was introduced to Mr Aho in October 2025 after my BPH prostate issue of 15 years became troublesome in a matter of weeks; I attended my local A&E as I could not empty my bladder due to something happening in my prostate, resulting in my being catheterised for 7 weeks; My prostate was given an MRI by the NHS, that showed an anomaly , and i was informed i should consider losing my prostate, as Surgery was my only option; I was 66 yrs of age at the time of the surgery; I spoke with Mr Aho, who is an absolute gentleman, with a fantastic bedside manner; He listened to my situation, explained very clearly what a HoLeP would involve, and we agreed to proceed; The procedure took place in London just 12 days after my discussion with Mr Aho, and all went well; I was discharged the next day, in my case with a catheter after my 2 months with one, and this was removed after 6 days; Once removed, i had no issues and found that i now had a high pressure ‘firehose’ when i urinated; I experienced no leaks, incontinence , ‘accidents’ etc, and only a mild tingling sensation where the equipment had been inserted for the procedure , that passed after a few weeks; After the catheter was removed, life returned to normal instantly; This is far better than the other surgery options, that can have ongoing issues , and I can’t thank Mr Aho enough for his skills and accepting me as his patient; The alternatives open to me were to horrific to consider; If you are considering this procedure , In my opinion, its by far the best option, and from a patient p...
