I was appointed as Consultant Coloproctologist to Good Hope Hospital (now part of University Hospitals, Birmingham) and Honorary
Senior Lecturer at Birmingham University in 1998.
I trained at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge University and the Royal London Hospital. Prior, to my Consultant appointment, I was Lecturer in Surgery at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.
In 1998, the Royal College of Surgeons of England appointed me Hunterian Professor, for my research into colonic flora and inflammatory bowel disease.
I have an interest in disorders of defaecation and the pelvic floor. I established the pelvic floor service at HEFT as well as
a number of new techniques to treat these problems such as sacral nerve stimulation. I am a founding member of the Pelvic Floor Society and have currently been re elected to the Executive Council.
I am the Joint Cancer Lead for University Hospitals, Birmingham and responsible for governance and ensuring best practice is followed in cancer treatment. I was the inaugural chair of the Specialised Colorectal Clinical Reference Group for NHS England and have
recently demitted chair of the External Affairs Committee of th eAssociation of Coloproctology of Great Britain & Ireland
