About Dr Kash Akhtar

Mr Kash Akhtar is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in knee injuries and treatments. He studied at Imperial College, graduating with a Distinction in Surgery and completed a sub-specialty fellowship in knee surgery (sports injuries, trauma and joint replacement) at Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford. He was subsequently awarded the prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship and spent 6 months in international centres of orthopaedic excellence across the U.S. He has given over 100 international presentations and has received multiple prizes and awards.

Mr Akhtar has been a Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon at Barts Health NHS Trust since 2014, one of the busiest hospitals in the UK, which receives complex tertiary referrals from a broad area. He has particular expertise in sports injuries, arthroscopic knee surgery, meniscal surgery/repair, cartilage injuries, knee ligament reconstruction, realignment surgery, partial and total knee replacement. However, his overriding philosophy is only to use surgery when absolutely necessary or as a last resort when all suitable non-surgical treatments (including physiotherapy, activity modification, exercise prescription, orthotics, braces, medications and guided injections) have been tried appropriately.

Mr Akhtar has completed two additional degrees in surgical education and training, and a Fellowship in Medical Education, Leadership and Management. He is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Orthopaedic Surgery & Surgical Education at Barts and the London School of Medicine & Dentistry, QMUL where he is the Course Director for the International Masters in Orthopaedic Trauma Science. He is the Training Programme Director for the Royal London Higher Surgical Training Rotation and an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

He is one of the founders of orthohub (www.orthohub.xyz) and is host of the award-winning orthohub see one / do one podcast (freely available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube)  that has been downloaded over a quarter of a million times in 140 countries around the world.

I recently saw Dr. Kash Akhtar regarding an ongoing knee issue and am extremely pleased with the care I received. He took the time to listen as I described how the injury occurred and the physiotherapy rehab, I had already undertaken. After carrying out an examination of my knee, he clearly explained how my cartilage had been affected and outlined my treatment options. I left the appointment feeling fully informed and confident in how to manage the care for my knee going forward.

I have referred patients to them

I had the pleasure of working closely with Kash Akhtar for several years and he remains one of my favourite knee specialists to collaborate with. During this time, I was fortunate to rehabilitate many patients following ACL reconstruction and meniscal repair under his care, consistently seeing excellent surgical planning and strong long-term outcomes. His approach is thoughtful, evidence-based, and genuinely patient-centred, and he works exceptionally well within a multidisciplinary team. I hold his clinical judgement in very high regard and would confidently recommend him to both patients and...

🎥 Unboxing a frozen allograft for ACL surgery

🎥 Unboxing a frozen allograft for ACL surgery

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at an Allograft — a donor tendon (in this case, tibialis posterior) we use to reconstruct a torn ACL. 🧬 What is an allograft?
An allograft is tissue from another human — processed, sterilised, and stored until it’s ready to be used in surgery. It avoids the need to harvest your own tendon, which means: ✅ No donor site pain or weakness
✅ Shorter operation time
✅ Quicker initial recovery 🛡️ Sterilisation & Safety
These grafts are rigorously screened and decontaminated through advanced sterilisation techniques like gamma irradiation or chemical processing. Infection risks are extremely low — and you don’t need anti-rejection medication, because the knee is an immune-privileged joint. That means your body accepts the graft without mounting a major immune response and will not reject it. 💪 Strength & Healing
Allografts can match the strength of the original ACL — though depending on how they’re processed, they may be slightly weaker than some AUTOgrafts (grafts taken from your own body such as patella or quad tendons).
And while recovery starts faster, the graft takes longer to fully incorporate compared to using your own tissue — something we factor into your rehab plan. 📈 For the right patient, in the right situation — especially in revision cases, multi-ligament injuries, or patients who want to avoid additional incisions — allografts are a powerful option in our ACL toolbox.
