About Mr Charlie Chan

Charlie Chan is a photographer and cancer surgeon practising in Cheltenham. In 1999, he was appointed as a NHS Consultant in General surgery with a specialist interest in breast, melanoma and sarcoma in 1999 in Bournemouth. He later moved to Cheltenham. In 2013 he left the NHS to enter full time private practice at the Nuffield Hospital in Cheltenham, where he continues to run regular breast one stop clinics aloingside a cosmetic breast and general surgery practice. He helped to established the only independent private sector multi disciplinary team meeting within Nuffield Health and started a cosmetic breast MDT meeting in 2015.

He has held a number of posts in BASO (British Association of Surgical Oncology) and ABS (Association of Breast Surgery) and was the senior author for the 2005 & 2009 “BASO Guidelines” on the surgical management of breast disease. He is a member of the Trials Management Committee for 3 large UK breast radiotherapy trials; these trials have changed practice across the world and the results have been published in the Lancet and Lancet Oncology.

Mr Chan has been a examiner for the European Board of Surgery - Breast Surgery qualification for over ten years. He is a faculty member on breast ultrasound courses, organised by UEA, with 25 years experience in breast ultrasound.

He has acted as an expert witness on breast medical negligence cases for nearly 20 years and was instructed as an expert witness in the Ian Paterson Class Action. Subsequently he was appointed by the Bishop of Norwich to act as a Professional Clinical Adviser to the Independent Inquiry.

In 2008, he was apointed to the Federation of Independent Practice Organisations FIPO; he is now a Vice Chair. FIPO published the first Private Patients Charter in 2007. Since then, he has represented FIPO at meetings with CSSD, the Competition and Markets Authority, Medical Practitioners Assurance Framework & others.

Away from the day job, you will find him at his night job, photographing rock and jazz bands. He was particularly good friends with the late Wilko Johnson, who sadly passed away in late 2022.
