About Mr Simon Wood
Mr Simon Wood is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board and in private practice at St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport. He provides consultations, diagnostic endoscopy and surgery for patients from across South Wales and the UK.
His principal areas of expertise are minimally invasive surgery for gallstones and gallbladder disease, and surgery for acid reflux and hiatus hernia. He has performed more than 1,000 laparoscopic cholecystectomies and treats both straightforward and complex gallstone disease. He also has particular experience caring for patients who develop symptomatic gallstones during or after treatment with GLP-1 medicines such as Mounjaro.
Mr Wood performs anti-reflux and hiatus hernia surgery, including fundoplication and LINX magnetic sphincter augmentation. He carefully considers each patient’s symptoms, investigation results and individual priorities when recommending treatment. He is currently the only surgeon offering LINX surgery privately in Wales.
His other specialist interests include achalasia, laparoscopic groin and abdominal wall hernia repair, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Wood is the National Clinical Lead for General Surgery in Wales. He works with the Welsh Government, health boards and surgical teams to improve the organisation, quality and delivery of general surgical care. He previously served as Clinical Director for General Surgery at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
Mr Wood completed specialist training in General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery in South Wales, followed by a Senior Fellowship in Upper GI Surgery in Adelaide, Australia. He holds a Master’s degree in Minimally Invasive Surgery from the University of Adelaide.
He is a Course Director at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, teaching basic and laparoscopic surgical skills to surgeons from the UK and internationally. He also supervises surgical trainees and examines Cardiff University medical students.

I had my gallbladder removed with Dr Wood at St Joseph’s Hospital. It ended up being quite a complicated procedure for Dr Wood (as I had a badly infected gallbladder) but procedure was handled perfectly and the care I received was first class. All the staff at the hospital were also brilliant. I appreciated the follow ups / phone calls and felt well cared for at all times. Can’t recommended enough. Excellent experience!

I attended a follow up appointment with Mr Wood after he had previously operated to repair an incisional hernia for me. The whole experience was positive, from the initial consultation, the procedure and the follow up. Mr Wood is very professional, courteous and has an impeccable bedside manner. The whole experience at St Joseph's couldn't have been better and I will not hesitate to contact them again if there is anything they may be able to help me with in the future
Following episodes of abdominal pain due to gall stones, I had a laparascopic cholecystectomy at the end of June 2026. I was amazed that within 2 weeks I felt absolutely fine. I only took painkillers for about 4 days. I was careful with my eating initially and then very quickly and happily returned to an unrestricted diet. The operation has been a great success and I'm very grateful to Mr Wood for his care and expertise!
Follow up appointment with Mr Wood. He carried out the removal of my gallbladder operation 6 weeks previously.
Great experience, Mr Wood was al aways very welcoming and good at explaining in an easy way to understand. He also offered some good advice & when I left the consultation, i felt great to know that everything was as expected and what I needed to continue. Brilliant service. Could not fault in anyway.

I had suffered with gastrointestinal problems for many years, so to now be pain-free & to also now be able to experience uninterrupted sleep with no discomfort is indeed a wonderful relief for me.
