About Mr Faris Soliman

About Me

I am a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon based at Spire Cardiff Hospital and the University Hospital of Wales. I specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the bowel, abdomen, and digestive system, and also provide care for a wide range of general surgical and emergency abdominal conditions.

My aim is to provide clear advice, compassionate care, and personalised treatment tailored to each patient's needs. I perform a broad range of procedures, including minimally invasive (keyhole) and robotic surgery, which can often result in less pain, smaller scars, and a faster recovery. I also undertake endoscopy and perform both colonoscopy and gastroscopy, including therapeutic endoscopy for colorectal conditions.

Conditions Treated

I treat a wide range of colorectal and general surgical conditions, including:

  • Bowel (colorectal) cancer
  • Investigation and management of bowel, abdominal, and/or anal symptoms
  • Colonic polyps
  • Diverticular disease
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis
  • Haemorrhoids, anal fistulas, anal fissures, skin tags, warts, and other anal conditions
  • Hernias; including groin hernias, umbilical hernias, complex abdominal wall hernias, recurrent hernias and parastomal hernias.
  • Stomas (colostomy and ileostomy), including stoma reversal
  • Lumps, bumps, sebaceous cysts, lipomas, and simple skin lesions

I also perform diagnostic investigations of the gastrointestinal tract, including colonoscopy and gastroscopy (endoscopy).

In addition, I have experience managing complex surgical conditions such as intestinal failure, abdominal wall fistulae, and complications following intestinal surgery.

Experience

I graduated from Cardiff University in 2010. Throughout my training and career, I have worked in hospitals across Wales, the West Midlands, and Manchester. I also gained valuable experience in trauma surgery during a period of training in South Africa.

My advanced specialist training includes:

  • Training at Salford Royal Hospital, a nationally recognised centre for intestinal failure and complex abdominal wall surgery
  • A one-year colorectal fellowship at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, where I trained in a high-volume centre managing a broad spectrum of colorectal conditions

This training has provided me with extensive experience in both routine and complex surgery using open, laparoscopic (keyhole), and robotic techniques.

Research and Teaching

Alongside my clinical practice, I am actively involved in research and medical education. I hold a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree for research into the spread of bowel cancer within the abdomen and have published in peer-reviewed medical journals, as well as presenting my work at national and international conferences.

I am passionate about teaching and training future surgeons and doctors. I hold a postgraduate qualification in medical education and am an Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University, where I regularly teach medical students and junior doctors. I also serve as the Royal College of Surgeons of England College Tutor, with responsibility for overseeing and supporting surgical training.

My Approach to Care

I understand that seeing a surgeon can often feel daunting. I aim to provide an approachable, professional environment where you feel comfortable discussing your concerns openly. My priority is to ensure that you fully understand your diagnosis and treatment options so that you can make informed decisions about your care.

My focus is on delivering safe, effective treatment and achieving the best possible outcomes for each patient.
