About Mr Alex Swanton

I am a Consultant Gynaecologist at The Royal Berkshire NHS Hospital Trust, specialising in Reproductive Medicine and Laparoscopic Surgery for benign conditions. In my primary role, I have held the position of Medical Lead for Gynaecology for five years, along with seven years as the Clinical Governance Lead. I have a busy surgical practice both in the NHS and independent sector. Additionally, I am a Director of TFP Thames Valley Fertility, a busy IVF clinic seeing both NHS and private patients.  I earned a Doctorate of Medicine in 2010 and became Fellow of The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in 2015. I am involved in teaching and supervising medical students, Foundation Year Doctors and Specialist Gynaecology Trainees.

I have developed particular expertise over a number of years in keyhole surgery for conditions including fibroids, hysterectomy and endometriosis. He is accredited and fee assured with all major health insurance companies.

I have over 20 years of IVF experience both in practice and research. My MD thesis studied women with PCOS undergoing IVF treatment and has received a number of national and international awards. My research interests include subfertility, PCOS, endometriosis, recurrent miscarriage and fibroids as well as being an expert in advanced laparoscopic surgery.

I am also a medico-legal expert witness in my area of expertise, and complete a number of reports annually.

Mr Swanton has been brilliant throughout the whole process and made me feel at ease. Always clearly explaining at every step what is happening but most important thing for me is he would ask me how I am. He is a fantastic consultant surgeon but most of all you really feel like he genuinely cares and is invested in your journey.

I cannot recommend Mr Swanton highly enough. From my very first appointment, he treated me with genuine empathy, compassion, and understanding. He took the time to listen to my concerns, explain my options clearly, and ensured I felt supported and informed throughout my treatment journey. I underwent a hysterectomy under Mr Swanton's care, and it has truly been life-changing. The surgery has had an enormous positive impact on my quality of life, and I am incredibly grateful for his expertise, professionalism, and the outstanding care I received before, during, and after the procedure. I would also like to give special thanks to Emma, his secretary, who was always kind, caring, and incredibly helpful. She was responsive to any questions or concerns I had and provided reassurance and support throughout the process. Her compassion and professionalism made a real difference during what could have been a very stressful time. The level of care I received from both Mr Swanton and Emma was exceptional. I am extremely grateful for everything they have done for me and would wholeheartedly recommend Mr Swanton to anyone seeking gynaecological care. Their expertise, compassion, and dedication to their patients are truly outstanding.

I recently saw Mr Swanton with suspected endometriosis after years of ongoing pain and uncertainty. Since before COVID, I had been back and forth between GPs and hospitals without any clear answers or effective support. From the very first consultation, Mr Swanton truly listened. He fully respected my decision not to pursue hormonal treatment due to previous adverse reactions, which meant a great deal to me. Following a diagnostic laparoscopy, he identified and excised areas of endometriosis. He explained everything clearly and thoroughly, which helped me feel informed and reassured throughout the process. The care I received from Mr Swanton and his team was exceptional at every stage — before, during, and after surgery. My recovery has been smooth, and the results have been life-changing. For the first time in years, I am pain-free. My energy levels have returned, and I no longer feel held back by constant fatigue. I genuinely feel like I have my life back. At my follow-up appointment, Mr Swanton again took the time to explain everything in detail, including the likelihood of recurrence. I feel well-informed and prepared for the future, and I would not hesitate to return to him should I need further treatment. I am incredibly grateful for the care I received and cannot recommend Mr Swanton highly enough.
