Dr Michael Clarke

Dr Michael Clarke is a dedicated Consultant General Surgeon who specialises in upper gastrointestinal, laparoscopic, and bariatric surgery. He provides patient-focused surgical care for a broad range of abdominal conditions, with an emphasis on delivering clear diagnoses and minimally invasive treatment options. His practice covers benign upper digestive tract disorders, complex abdominal wall conditions, and metabolic weight loss surgery, working closely with patients to achieve the best possible health outcomes.

In his clinical practice, Dr Clarke diagnoses and treats conditions such as gallstone disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatus hernias, achalasia, and abdominal wall hernias. He performs keyhole surgical procedures including laparoscopic cholecystectomy, anti-reflux operations, and groin hernia repairs. In addition to surgical interventions, Dr Clarke performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and offers specialised oesophageal diagnostic investigations, using high-resolution manometry and 24-hour pH monitoring to assess gullet function and reflux symptoms.

Dr Clarke completed his medical training at the University of Nottingham Medical School, qualifying with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) in 1999, having previously earned a Bachelor of Medical Sciences with Honours in 1997. He undertook postgraduate research at the University of Bristol, where he was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) in 2007, alongside a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS in General Surgery) in 2010 and completed an advanced fellowship in upper gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery in New Zealand. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and maintains active professional memberships with the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS).
