About Dr Somayyeh Mossadegh

Miss Somayyeh Mossadegh is a Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Surgeon with a distinctive background combining advanced surgical training, military medicine and academic research. Her clinical career spans general surgery, oesophagogastric surgery, hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) surgery and colorectal surgery. Alongside her surgical practice, she has developed a strong research interest in applying artificial intelligence and advanced statistical modelling to improve clinical decision-making and patient outcomes. Her combination of clinical experience and academic expertise brings a research-informed perspective to the assessment and surgical management of gastrointestinal conditions.

Miss Mossadegh's practice focuses on general and upper gastrointestinal surgery, supported by extensive training across several surgical specialties. Her clinical background includes oesophagogastric surgery and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, alongside experience in colorectal, vascular and breast surgery. This broad training provides a foundation for assessing a range of surgical conditions and determining appropriate management strategies. Her current consultant role is centred on general and upper GI surgery.

Miss Mossadegh is a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, having taken up the position in August 2026. She is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at the University of Exeter. Previously, she worked in general surgery at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust and undertook senior specialist training at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, including dedicated posts in oesophagogastric and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

Earlier in her career, she served as a Medical Officer in the Royal Air Force for almost a decade, gaining experience in military medicine and trauma-related care. She also undertook academic trauma research at Barts and The London NHS Trust, developing expertise in the evaluation and management of serious injuries.

Miss Mossadegh completed doctoral research at Queen Mary University of London exploring the application of artificial intelligence and Bayesian networks to trauma assessment and clinical decision support. Her research has examined ways to improve the prediction of trauma-related complications and mortality, refine injury assessment and support more informed clinical decisions. Her peer-reviewed publications cover trauma systems, clinical decision-support modelling and surgical research. This academic background complements her clinical work and reflects a continuing interest in translating research into practical improvements in patient care.

Miss Mossadegh's combined surgical and research experience supports a considered approach to clinical decision-making. Her work focuses on evaluating each patient's condition, identifying appropriate treatment options and using clinical evidence to guide management. Her background in both general and specialist surgery provides a broad perspective when considering individual needs, treatment choices and recovery.
