Dr Mark Cartmell

Dr Mark Cartmell is a highly accomplished Consultant General Surgeon and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon who specialises in the diagnosis, management, and surgical treatment of colorectal conditions. With a primary clinical focus on colorectal cancer, he is dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centred care. His expertise spans a wide range of bowel and abdominal conditions, ensuring that patients receive tailored treatment pathways designed to achieve the best possible outcomes. He is committed to utilising advanced surgical techniques, including laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, to minimise recovery times and enhance patient comfort.

Dr Cartmell has a distinguished academic background and holds several advanced medical qualifications. He completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1989, followed by a Master of Arts in 1992. He qualified with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1994. Committed to continuous professional development, he obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) in 1998. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Eng) in 1999, completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree in 2003, and achieved his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in General Surgery (FRCS Gen) in 2006. He is also an active member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI).

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Cartmell has held significant leadership roles, including serving as a Joint Clinical Director for regional cancer services. In this capacity, he has worked to improve the organisation and delivery of cancer care, ensuring that patients benefit from prompt, seamless, and high-quality treatment pathways. His clinical philosophy is rooted in multidisciplinary collaboration, working closely with Consultant Radiologists, Consultant Oncologists, Consultant Pathologists, and Consultant Gastroenterologists to deliver holistic care. He prioritises clear communication, ensuring that patients are fully informed and supported throughout their surgical journey.
