Mr Rob Bethune is a highly respected Colorectal Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, as well as a senior lecturer in Healthcare Leadership at Exeter Medical School. His clinical practice centres on laparoscopic surgery, particularly the operative management of inflammatory bowel disease. He also treats a wide range of general colorectal and peri-anal conditions, including hernias, haemorrhoids and complex anal pathology, offering both laparoscopic and open surgical approaches.
After a formative year working as a surgeon in a rural mission hospital in Zambia, he paused his surgical training to join the South West Strategic Health Authority as a healthcare manager. During this time, he helped coordinate a 17-hospital safety collaborative focused on raising peri-operative standards across the region. His passion for patient safety and system improvement continues in his role as clinical lead for the quality improvement team in Exeter.
Mr Bethune has contributed substantially to the understanding of human factors in clinical practice. His master’s thesis explored the impact of pre-operative briefings and debriefings on surgical team performance, and he later joined the UK Department of Health’s Human Factors Steering Group. He has published widely on patient safety, team communication, human factors and quality improvement, and is recognised for his ability to bridge frontline clinical experience with evidence-based system change.

The nurses advice about the operation was very good and thank you to Mr Rob Bethune for the operation and follow-up
Mr Bethune is a highly skilled professional with a friendly, compassionate and caring bedside manner. I would definitely recommend him friends and family.
I was very impressed with my initial consultation with Mr Bethune and extremely happy with the subsequent operation and post operative recovery.
I felt very informed and cared for through all of my appointments. Thank you.
He was actually a telephone consultation which went very well
I met mr Rob Bethune at a preliminary meeting to discuss having a hernia repair. He explained everything very clearly and I decided to go ahead and have it done. On the day of the procedure I was escorted to a room to await my turn. The procedur was done under a local anesthletic and took about an hour and I was conscious all the time and then taken back to my room. I was allowed home after about an hour. I was a bit uncomfortable for about a week but have been 100 percent since with no repercussions. Mr Rob Bethune is a great surgeon.

thank you very much for this very kind review

Everybody normally has tissue near the back passage that can sense the difference between solid, liquid and stool. It is also part of the continence mechanism. In some cases if the pressure upstream builds up then this tissue swells and that swollen tissue is what we call piles (or haemorrhoids). In about half the cases […]

This is a very common syndrome and can occur in all ages. We are not sure exactly what causes it but it does seem to be related to diet and stress. The main symptoms are abdominal pain, bloating and a change in bowel habit. To an extent all of us will have it at some […]

A fissure is a small tear of the skin around the back passage. They can be very painful and can bleed. In general they are caused by constipation and straining, however they can just occur with no cause. The simplest treatment is to use a cream (Diltiazem ointment) which relaxes the muscle and heals the […]
