Mr. Jonathan R. A. Phillips is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee problems, and he has been serving at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital since 2015. He treats arthritis using both partial and total knee replacement surgeries, and he utilises advanced keyhole techniques for repairing meniscal and cartilage issues. A high-volume user of Mako robotic surgery, he has a specialist interest in managing complex knee arthritis and performing revision operations for problematic knee replacements, including cases with painful implants, infections, or loosening and wear. Additionally, he offers non-surgical treatments such as injections and knee braces.
Mr. Phillips completed fellowships at Exeter and Nottingham, and he works closely with his colleagues at the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit in the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, where his academic focus lies on knee and revision arthroplasty and prosthetic joint infections. As the South West Revision Knee Network Lead, he coordinates complex knee surgeries across the region. He is also an active member of the ODEP and Beyond Compliance committees, as well as the BASK Revision Knee and Primary Arthroplasty Working Groups, and collaborates with the National Joint Registry. Furthermore, he serves on the editorial boards of the BJJ 360 and KSSTA journals and is the organiser of the UK Revision Knee Instructional Course.
Mr. Phillips is frequently invited to speak at national and international forums about knee replacements and is part of the European faculty for teaching Mako robotic knee surgery. He is a member of the prestigious European Knee Society and has previously collaborated with Versus Arthritis to set up a Joint Understanding peer support network for patients undergoing knee arthroplasty.
Earlier in his career, he completed a Master's Degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine, which led him to volunteer at the London 2012 Olympics, caring for athletics at the Olympic Stadium.

Mr Jonathan R. A. Phillips maintains a professional and clear approach with his patients. He provides full explanations for key procedures like total knee replacements and steroid injections. Patients feel listened to and confident in his expertise and the excellent care received. Effective management of knee pain and arthritis forms a strong theme, leading to good treatment outcomes.
Mr Phillips took time to review the history, listen to the problems I've been experiencing , examine the knee and reassure me there is no ongoing problem. Professional, but friendly and no rushing on the time spent.
By having the robot for surgery and the Game Ready ice sleeve to help with recovery, both recommended by Mr Philips, I made a very quick recovery, obviously it did involve a lot of exercises, but it was much faster than my last knee replacement.
my experience with Mr Philips has been outstanding on both occasions when I had total knee replacements, on having realised I needed my second replacement ,i only wanted Mr Philips to do procedure. Complete confidence in him, with an approachable manner
I was able to book an appointment within 4 weeks and hoped for a clear diagnosis on my knee and hip pain .Mr Phillips was able to do that with some xrays and examination. He had sensible recommendations for next steps, starting with steroid injections and explained that this could be done in his clinic or through my GP. He stressed that I could refer back to him at any point. Thank you.
Everything went smoothly and as expected. Only downside was that the operation was quite late resulting in a lengthy period of time between the early arrival and the operation. Maybe if this had been known I needn't have arrived quite so early and could have had a light breakfast.
Mr Phillips previously investigated a problem with my knee, resulting in an injection circa 9 months ago. This was successful and has lasted longer than might have been expected. Pain recently recurred, so Mr Phillips has repeated the injection. It's early days but the injection seems to be improving things already. Mr Phillips has always been polite, cheerful, clear in in his explanations, and confident that his treatment will 'do the trick'. The injections have been administered with minimum discomfort, and I am grateful for the treatment I have received to date.
I am extremely pleased with the initial and post operation consultations with Jonathan Phillips and for his expertise in carrying out my replacement knee surgery, along with the anaesthetist Mr Martin and Nursing Staff. I would like to thank all the Nuffield Staff I came in to contact with for their helpful, efficient and friendly manner they conduct their work. I have confidence that if I have future concerns regarding my osteo arthritis or associated ailments I will be happy to consult with Jonathan Phillips. I cannot fault the experience I have had at the Nuffield.
Mr Phillips was genuinely concerned with the pain I was experiencing and offered immediate treatment ( a steroid injection) which helped tremendously. He efficiently contacted me via e mail letter just two days later with positive suggestions on the way forward, which I am actioning with him.
The atmosphere in the hospital is very relaxed and the staff are friendly, welcoming and very helpful. Mr Phillips has a warm and gentle bedside manner and is easy to talk to. He immediately understood my problem and calmly and clearly explained how he could help me. I felt happy and confident under his care. There is very limited parking at the hospital so I travelled by train and had a taxi from the station, which worked very well.
I have worked with Jon for many years and he is an excellent surgeon
