Mr. Jonathan R. A. Phillips is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon specialising in knee problems, and he has been serving at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital since 2015. He treats arthritis using both partial and total knee replacement surgeries, and he utilises advanced keyhole techniques for repairing meniscal and cartilage issues. A high-volume user of Mako robotic surgery, he has a specialist interest in managing complex knee arthritis and performing revision operations for problematic knee replacements, including cases with painful implants, infections, or loosening and wear. Additionally, he offers non-surgical treatments such as injections and knee braces.
Mr. Phillips completed fellowships at Exeter and Nottingham, and he works closely with his colleagues at the Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit in the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, where his academic focus lies on knee and revision arthroplasty and prosthetic joint infections. As the South West Revision Knee Network Lead, he coordinates complex knee surgeries across the region. He is also an active member of the ODEP and Beyond Compliance committees, as well as the BASK Revision Knee and Primary Arthroplasty Working Groups, and collaborates with the National Joint Registry. Furthermore, he serves on the editorial boards of the BJJ 360 and KSSTA journals and is the organiser of the UK Revision Knee Instructional Course.
Mr. Phillips is frequently invited to speak at national and international forums about knee replacements and is part of the European faculty for teaching Mako robotic knee surgery. He is a member of the prestigious European Knee Society and has previously collaborated with Versus Arthritis to set up a Joint Understanding peer support network for patients undergoing knee arthroplasty.
Earlier in his career, he completed a Master's Degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine, which led him to volunteer at the London 2012 Olympics, caring for athletics at the Olympic Stadium.

Mr Jonathan R. A. Phillips consistently offers clear explanations to patients. He thoroughly discusses many knee issues, including arthritis and knee replacement, guiding individuals through all treatment options. Patients frequently praise his excellent pre and post-operative care, valuing patient involvement and detailed follow-up communications. Successful outcomes are common for conditions involving knee pain and arthritis, with knee replacement and steroid injection procedures featuring prominently.
The atmosphere in the hospital is very relaxed and the staff are friendly, welcoming and very helpful. Mr Phillips has a warm and gentle bedside manner and is easy to talk to. He immediately understood my problem and calmly and clearly explained how he could help me. I felt happy and confident under his care. There is very limited parking at the hospital so I travelled by train and had a taxi from the station, which worked very well.
I sometimes find it difficult to determine what Mr Phillips is really intending. The latest consultation seems to have moved from private treatment to NHS treatment.
I have had severe arthritis from the age of 18- 62 years ago. A consultant at Charing Cross hospital said “you’ll probably be in a wheelchair by 45” Since then drugs (NSAIDS + pain killers) have been a revolution. So far only a few hourly visits in a wheelchair. However arthritis is still a mystery. I desperately needed advice on pain management both for external(cream/gel), and internal, Mr Phillips explanations, advice and prescription were as good as I could have hoped for. I am perfectly happy to sign this note. Simon E.
From the minute I booked my initial consultation with Mr Philips I knew I was in safe hands. He is so professional and makes the patient feel comfortable and so at ease with his explanation on all the procedures. I feel very lucky that he was able to see me and I would continue to recommend him.
Comprehensive and responsive service with full explanation of the proposed surgery. Ample opportunity given to ask questions and seek any clarification. I would recommend Mr Phillips to family and friends.
Excellent pre and post operation care, including calling at the weekend to follow up on a particular concern that I had. Very good explanations of all relevant detail. The operation itself was technically very good apparently. Friendly manner.
I was very happy with my visit to Mr Phillps who explained what was wrong with my knee and what options were available to me to help it heal.
I am so impressed and grateful with the service you provide. I can not fault anything at all! The running of your clinic was exceptional. On my recent appointment with you, I got stuck in heavy traffic and was 15 min late. I was so worried I would miss my appointment. I phoned the reception team to let them know and they were so helpful and put my mind at rest and said they would let you know and to still attend my appointment. On arrival you called me into your treatment room and again made me feel at ease. I received my treatment and you made me feel that the time constraint was not a problem. Sadly not the experience in the NHS. Your clinical care was outstanding and your manner was so refreshingly and reassuringly appreciated. We also discussed that you see some of my patients from the Lower limb service. You have given me your secretary’s email and if ever we require any advice with any of our complexed patients re infection you would be happy for us to contact you. Gold standard care throughout, thank you!
I have worked with Jon for many years and he is an excellent surgeon
