About Dr Marco Spartera

Dr. Marco Spartera is an NHS Consultant Cardiologist at both the John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and the Great Western Hospital NHS. In addition to his NHS roles, he is the director of Oxford Cardiovascular Health Ltd (OCH), a private clinic providing cardiology services across Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, and the Cotswolds.

Internationally recognised for his expertise in multi-modality cardiovascular imaging, Dr. Spartera specialises in diagnosing and managing complex cardiac conditions, including those related to ischaemic stroke, obesity, atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure. He also leads clinical services such as the 'stroke-cardiology' and 'valve clinic' at the Great Western Hospital.

Dr. Spartera has an empathetic and compassionate approach to his practice, offering consultations via video, telephone, or face-to-face appointments. His patients consistently provide positive feedback, emphasising his ability to deliver clear, actionable cardiology plans that are tailored to each individual’s needs and values.

With a special focus on non-invasive cardiac imaging, Dr. Spartera employs advanced diagnostic tools, including cardiovascular MRI, cardiac CT, and sophisticated echocardiography techniques such as trans-oesophageal, bubble, contrast, 3D, and stress echocardiography. His diagnostic expertise is often sought in challenging cases where symptoms are complex or have remained unresolved after multiple consultations. His ability to navigate these intricate cases ensures accurate, timely assessments and personalised care.

Dr. Spartera earned his PhD in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Oxford, where he currently leads research into cardiac flow abnormalities, aiming to uncover novel mechanisms of cardioembolism and heart failure. He is also a principal investigator in the LOSE-AF trial, which explores weight loss as a strategy to improve outcomes for overweight/obese patients with atrial fibrillation. His research is supported by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the British Heart Foundation.

After experiencing a racing heartbeat and occasional atrial fibrillation, Dr Spartera was both very thorough with examinations and very reassuring. I felt able to ask him any questions and he gave me a clear explanation of the drugs he recommended and subsequently prescribed. I am very glad I chose to see him.

Dr Spartera quickly put me at ease, explained clearly and slowly what was going to happen and made the procedure a tolerable one. Thank you.

Overall reassuring and understood the approach for myself as a person and could see I was anxious and knew how to deal with this. Did not feel rushed which also helped. One point to raise is that in the follow up letter it mentions my next appointment which is face to face on the 11th March being at the ridgeway hospital, however I have had a confirmation email sent inviting me to attend this appointment at the Manor hospital, so will have to chase up to now see where this is taking place. Overall though very good experience.

I was impressed with the professional service provided by the Consultant. He was interested in my condition, asked specific questions and took a sincere interest in my experience of my symptoms relating to my condition. He provided me with a clear plan of what the next course of action would be to enable him to get more data on my condition to be able to provide a diagnosis. The booking of the appointments to enable this and the follow up appointment with him, once the data has been considered.
