About Dr Marco Spartera

Dr. Marco Spartera is an NHS Consultant Cardiologist at both the John Radcliffe Hospital (Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) and the Great Western Hospital NHS. In addition to his NHS roles, he is the director of Oxford Cardiovascular Health Ltd (OCH), a private clinic providing cardiology services across Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, and the Cotswolds.

Internationally recognised for his expertise in multi-modality cardiovascular imaging, Dr. Spartera specialises in diagnosing and managing complex cardiac conditions, including those related to ischaemic stroke, obesity, atrial fibrillation, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, and heart failure. He also leads clinical services such as the 'stroke-cardiology' and 'valve clinic' at the Great Western Hospital.

Dr. Spartera has an empathetic and compassionate approach to his practice, offering consultations via video, telephone, or face-to-face appointments. His patients consistently provide positive feedback, emphasising his ability to deliver clear, actionable cardiology plans that are tailored to each individual’s needs and values.

With a special focus on non-invasive cardiac imaging, Dr. Spartera employs advanced diagnostic tools, including cardiovascular MRI, cardiac CT, and sophisticated echocardiography techniques such as trans-oesophageal, bubble, contrast, 3D, and stress echocardiography. His diagnostic expertise is often sought in challenging cases where symptoms are complex or have remained unresolved after multiple consultations. His ability to navigate these intricate cases ensures accurate, timely assessments and personalised care.

Dr. Spartera earned his PhD in cardiovascular medicine at the University of Oxford, where he currently leads research into cardiac flow abnormalities, aiming to uncover novel mechanisms of cardioembolism and heart failure. He is also a principal investigator in the LOSE-AF trial, which explores weight loss as a strategy to improve outcomes for overweight/obese patients with atrial fibrillation. His research is supported by the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre and the British Heart Foundation.

Dr Marco Spartera was very professional in conducting himself and also carrying out the relevant checks that i needed. He was also very thoughtful in his words when explaining the findings that were not the best of news.

I was lucky enough to be referred to Dr Spartera at the Ridgeway hospital Wroughton with what I thought was a minor heart condition. After an ECG, though examination and further tests I was told that my condition was a little more serious! Dr Spartera was generous with his time and fully explained what was wrong and how he planned to look after me to see that I continued to enjoy my life. My treatment started the next day. Dr Spartera showed great care, professionalism and skill throughout the consultation. I have no hesitation in recommending his services to anyone with a concern about their heart.

Dr Spartera was great. Lovely person, he made me feel at ease, he listened to me and took the required actions. Also, with something minor I could have, he also reassured me that this was not life threatening and carry on as normal either way. He got a 2 week monitor fitted as well. No questions were off the table and I felt very comfortable I knew I was in good hands.

I was very tired because it was an evening appointment and I found it difficult to take it all in, but I know that Dr Spartera did everything he could to explain the situation to me.

Dr Spartera was very friendly and approachable. He gave me plenty of time to ask questions. I had to have an ultrasound scan of my heart which was a little embarrassing for me but he carried it out in a very professional manner and seemed genuinely very pleased with the result. I would certainly recommend him to other patients.
