Dr Simon McLaughlin

Dr. Simon McLaughlin is a Consultant Gastroenterologist with many years of experience in the treatment and management of gut issues, including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease, and irritable bowel syndrome. He sees private patients at Private Health University Hospitals Dorset (Previously known as Bournemouth Private Clinic) the Bournemouth Nuffield Private Hospital and also offers remote consultations by telephone and video-call.

Dr. McLaughlin studied medicine at Guy's, King's, and St. Thomas Medical School, and graduated in 2000. He later undertook clinical research at St. Mark's and St. Thomas'
Hospitals London. During this time, he researched the inflammatory mechanisms
behind ulcerative colitis in patients who had undergone restorative proctocolectomy
(pouch) procedures. He developed new treatment strategies for these patients.
This research resulted in Dr. McLaughlin gaining his Medical Doctorate in
research from Imperial College London.

Dr. McLaughlin then went on to undertake further training at St. Thomas' Hospital, where he gained expertise in video capsule endoscopy and advanced endoscopy including balloon-assisted enteroscopy. Upon completion of his training, Dr. McLaughlin was appointed Consultant at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital and has remained involved in the scientific research community, publishing numerous peer-reviewed articles, in addition to several book chapters on inflammatory bowel disease. He has also written the Coeliac Disease guidelines for the British Society of Gastroenterology.

Dr. McLaughlin leads the video capsule endscopy service at Bournemouth and is the first consultant in Dorset to offer non-invasive video-capsule alternatives to a
gastroscopy and colonoscopy. These are entirely painless and require no sedatives.

Dr. McLaughlin has particular expertise in removing large complex polyp growths and
offers the FTRD (Full thickness resection device) that can be an alternative to surgery. for polyps or small bowel cancers.
