Professor Javed Ahmed

Professor Ahmed is a senior consultant interventional cardiologist and professor of cardiology at the Freeman Hospital Newcastle upon Tyne.

He is an expert in interventional cardiology including, coronary angiography, complex percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI, coronary angioplasty and stenting).

He has a broad based training in all aspects of general cardiology with particular expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. He regularly consults patients presenting with following symptoms:

• Chest pain.
• Shortness of breath.
• Dizzy spells.
• Blackouts.
• Palpitations.
• Heart murmurs

He is also skilled in the treatment hyperlipidaemia (raised cholesterol) and hypertension (high blood pressure), and also in, the assessment and treatment of heart failure and valvular heart disease. He is interested in cardiovascular disease prevention and the assessment of patients at risk of developing heart attack and stroke using the latest diagnostic technology.

Professor Ahmed is very patient focused and strongly believes in providing a high quality and individualised approach to patient care.

He is expert in interventional cardiology performing coronary angioplasty and stenting (PCI) for the treatment of coronary artery disease. The majority of his procedures are performed via the radial artery (wrist). This is a minimally invasive technique associated with fewer complications and faster patient recovery.

He has got a major interest in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome (heart attack) and was instrumental in setting up the service of Primary PCI at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Professor Ahmed is one of the international experts in complex coronary interventional techniques and invasive coronary imaging. Over the years, he has developed considerable experience in rotational atherectomy, laser coronary angioplasty and stenting, which forms part of his routine clinical practice and research expertise. He has also developed an interest in cardiac computerised tompgraphy imaging (CT) for both diagnosis and research in coronary artery disease.

He is also interested in the relationship between heart disease and stroke, investigating younger patients presenting with cryptogenic (unexplained) stroke.
