About Mr Andrew Hextall

Mr Hextall's practice covers all aspects of gynaecology. He has specialist clinics in Urogynaecology and treats a large number of women each year with prolapse, urinary incontinence and other bladder problems such as pain or recurrent cystitis.

As he is both a Gynaecologist and Urogynaecologist he can see women who have both gynaecological problems and bladder symptoms, which is really useful as often these can occur at the same time.

Mr Hextall also has a special interest in modern treatments for heavy periods and pelvic pain which can often be performed in a day case setting. He has expertise in the laparoscopic (key hole) treatment of endometriosis.

Mr Hextall is an Accredited Specialist with the British Menopause Society (BMS).  Andrew has undertaken research and written book chapters on the treatment of the menopause.  He was awarded an MD for his work on ‘The effect of oestrogen and the menopause on the female lower urinary tract', and is currently on the Editorial Board of the menopause journal Maturitas and reviews papers for another menopause journal called Climateric.  Mr Hextall is very aware of how troublesome menopausal symptoms can be and is happy to help.

Mr Hextall also specialises in vulval and vaginal skin problems having run a combined clinic in this area with a Consultant Dermatologist at St Albans City Hospital.

After going to Nottingham High School, Mr Hextall qualified from Birmingham Medical School in 1990. He was appointed as a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2002.  He also see patients privately in Hertfordshire.

In addtion to his clinical work, Mr Hextall was Chairman of the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) Audit and Database Committee and Secretary of the Hertfordshire Medical Society.  He has received many Clinical Excellence Awards plus he has lectured in the UK and abroad.

Andrew has been happily married since 2002.  His wife is a palliative care nurse. He has 3 children - the oldest of which is a junior doctor (currently training to be a surgeon) and the youngest a Physiotherapist.  His other son is the only non-medical memeber of the family and has chosen to do something else! He likes to run and cycle, and when given the opportunity play golf!

I saw Mr Hextall as I was suffering from severe vaginal pain. Two previous consultants had diagnosed a prolapse and suggested surgery. However, Mr Hextall was not convinced my symptoms fitted this diagnosis and recommended an examination under anaesthetic. There he found a mild prolapse but also chronic inflammation of the bladder and contusions caused by a succession of pessaries fitted by previous practitioners. He removed the current pessary to stop the contusions and gave me antibiotics for the bladder inflammation and miraculously, the pain disappeared. I'm extremely grateful to Mr Hextall for not having followed previous diagnoses and potentially subjecting me to unnecessary surgery. Instead he took a more thorough investigative path to understand the cause of the pain. I'm most impressed by his expertise in this field.
