DJ
Ophthalmologist
Truro, TR1 3UP
I aim for a relaxed and reassuring manner with my patients. I am passionate about clear patient communication and am committed to understanding exactly what my patients want from me, whether that is simple reassurance, advice on eye health, or eye surgery.
I grew up in Somerset. When I was 16 years old my only ambition was to become an eye doctor and to work in the Southwest. That took me 18 years. I now hold an MA (Hons) in neurological sciences from Cambridge University. I qualified as a doctor from Oxford Medical School in 1995 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2006. I was appointed as a permanent, full-time consultant ophthalmologist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in 2007 and have been there ever since.
I have clinical expertise in the following areas:
I began my ophthalmology career in Taunton before spending eight years training in the West of Scotland. I completed a clinical fellowship at Great Ormond Street Hospital in 2004.
I have been a full-time NHS consultant for 16 years and am lead consultant for development of the cataract service at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. In the NHS I have held several senior roles including eye department lead, governance lead, educational supervisor, consultant mentor and executive coach. At the Duchy Hospital I am a GMC appraiser for doctors working in the independent sector.
Outside of the hospital, I am a classical pianist and was awarded Dip ABRSM in 2013.
