Dr Asma Fikree

Dr Asma Fikree is a dedicated Consultant Gastroenterologist and Consultant Neurogastroenterologist who provides reassuring, patient-centred care for individuals experiencing complex digestive and gut-brain disorders. Known for her empathetic and holistic approach, she specialises in diagnosing and managing functional gastrointestinal conditions that affect long-term quality of life. Dr Fikree works within multidisciplinary teams, combining clinical expertise with cutting-edge research to deliver tailored care plans for every patient.

Dr Fikree completed her preclinical medical education at Cambridge University, where she was awarded a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Psychology in 1999. She subsequently completed her clinical medical training at Oxford University, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBCh) in 2002. In 2006, she attained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians, before undertaking Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine. She completed a PhD in 2013, investigating the association between Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and functional gastrointestinal disorders, and entered the Specialist Register in 2015. Alongside her clinical work, she serves as an Honorary Associate Professor and is the Chair of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology.

In her clinical practice, Dr Fikree focuses on disorders of gut-brain interaction, gastrointestinal motility disorders, and the complex digestive manifestations of hereditary connective tissue conditions. Her areas of expertise include irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, chronic constipation, swallowing difficulties (dysphagia), indigestion, rectal hyposensitivity, and chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction. She has a particular focus on supporting patients living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and joint hypermobility, utilising diagnostic techniques in gastrointestinal physiology to guide individualised pharmacological, nutritional, and therapeutic management.
