About Mr Alexander Hrycaiczuk

Mr Alex Hrycaiczuk is an internationally trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising exclusively in foot and ankle surgery. He has a particular interest in modern, minimally invasive techniques designed to optimise outcomes, reduce post-operative pain, and accelerate rehabilitation.

Originally from Yorkshire, Mr Hrycaiczuk completed his undergraduate medical training at Merton College, University of Oxford, and Imperial College School of Medicine, graduating in 2011. He undertook his early postgraduate training in Oxford and Bristol before relocating to Glasgow in 2015, where he completed his orthopaedic registrar training on the West of Scotland Training Programme.

Following completion of specialist training and the award of FRCS (Orth) from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Mr Hrycaiczuk pursued advanced subspecialist fellowship training in foot and ankle surgery. He completed a fellowship in Edinburgh with a focus on ankle arthritis, reconstruction, and minimally invasive techniques, before being awarded the prestigious British Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Travelling Fellowship. This enabled him to travel abroad with his young family to Melbourne, Australia, where he undertook dedicated foot and ankle fellowship training at the internationally recognised Melbourne Orthopaedic Group with Dr Tim Schneider and Dr David Shepherd. He subsequently completed a lower limb trauma fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital under Dr Andrew Oppy. This extensive fellowship training has provided Alex with broad experience in complex foot and ankle pathology, reconstruction, trauma, and contemporary surgical techniques, equipping him with a comprehensive, modern, and evidence-based skillset.

Alex works as a full-time NHS Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, and also sees patients in the private sector. His practice is dedicated entirely to foot and ankle conditions, encompassing both routine presentations and complex revision cases.

He treats a wide range of conditions including ankle arthritis and stiffness, sports injuries and ligament instability, Achilles tendon disorders, bunions and forefoot pain, toe deformities, flatfoot and high-arch conditions, post-traumatic pain, complex fractures, and persistent foot or ankle pain affecting mobility, work, or sport. Where appropriate, Alex prioritises non-surgical and joint-preserving treatments. When surgery is indicated, he adopts a balanced approach, combining established techniques with modern and emerging surgical options, including minimally invasive bunion and Achilles tendon surgery, with the aim of reducing recovery time and supporting a smooth and safe patient journey.

Alex is deeply committed to medical education and surgical training. He is faculty on the University of Edinburgh ChM Trauma & Orthopaedics programme and holds the post of Clinical Lecturer at the University of Glasgow. He is a recognised educational and clinical supervisor for orthopaedic trainees and serves as Orthopaedic Registrar Lead at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. He believes his continued involvement in education ensures his clinical practice remains current, evidence-based, and outcomes-focused.

Alex strongly believes that care should be individualised, with no “one-size-fits-all” approach. His consultations are unhurried and patient-centred, focusing on understanding each patient’s symptoms, goals, and expectations. Through shared decision-making, he works collaboratively with patients to develop clear, tailored treatment plans, empowering them to make informed decisions and achieve the best possible outcomes.
