About Mrs Afshan Khaja

Dr. Afshan Khaja is an experienced Urogynaecology Consultant with over a decade of dedicated service within the NHS. She is passionate about improving women’s quality of life, specialising in the management and treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. Her patient-centred approach focuses on providing safe, effective, and individualised care tailored to each woman’s needs.

A key strength of Dr. Khaja’s practice is her ability to offer surgical solutions to women who may previously have been considered medically unfit for surgery due to complex health conditions. By performing selected procedures under local anaesthesia, she expands treatment options for patients who might otherwise have limited choices. She has particular expertise in urinary incontinence surgery using a patient’s own tissues, with a strong emphasis on avoiding mesh whenever possible.

Alongside her clinical work, Dr. Khaja is deeply committed to medical education. She serves on the national interview panel for Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainees, contributes as a Part 3 MRCOG examiner, lectures third-year medical students at Birmingham Medical School, and examines fourth-year students.

Dr. Khaja is also actively involved in charitable initiatives in Pakistan and plans to extend her work to India, while regularly speaking at community events across Birmingham.

I went to Mrs Khaja for an ongoing episiotomy infection post childbirth. The symptoms had been ongoing for 5 and a half months (abnormal discharge) and had been to NHS GP numerous times but wasn’t diagnosed until the 6th visit and an NHS referral to gynaecology was completed via the NHS. The NHS GP said it could take up to 2 years for the referral and surgery to be completed. I decided to visit Mrs Khaja and paid private. She examined me and confirmed it was an episiotomy infection and gave me 3 options - leave it, antibiotics or surgery. I had already tried antibiotics via nhs gp to no improvement so went for the surgery option via general anaesthetic. It was completed within 2 weeks of the initial appt - surgery was successful and information given to me was clear. Mrs Khaja came and saw me on the day of the surgery prior to going down to theatre. It was a 20-30 min surgery and I recovered well after. It was a day case and discharged same day. Since the surgery all symptoms have gone - no discharge no pain and feel back to my normal self - thank you Mrs Khaja. I can also now go back swimming with my little boy who adores the water! Would totally recommend! & would have no hesitation coming back again for any future problem Laura

I saw Mrs Khaja at the Spire Clinic. Other than having to wait 40 mins for my appointment, although I do understand things happen at short notice my experience was very positive. Mrs Khaja was easy to talk to and she gave me some helpful information. She also explained things very well.
