Prof Owens qualified in medicine with honours in Queen's University, Belfast and undertook basic surgical training and early cardiothoracic training in Northern Ireland and awarded Fellowship of Royal Colleges of Surgery of England and Ireland. He was then appointed as a transplant fellow in Papworth Hospital, Cambridge and trained in all aspects of cardiopulmonary transplantation, subsequently undertook higher specialist training in Newcastle and Middlesbrough, with two years spent in the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Australia.
He was appointed as consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2002 and since then has run a busy cardiac surgery practice offering the full range of cardiac surgical procedures with a personal focus on complex aortic, redo and minimally invasive procedures.
He has recieved several awards including a Hunterian Profesorship in 2009 - the Hunterian Professorship is among the most esteemed awards within the field of surgery, named after the pioneering surgeon scientist John Hunter, and awarded annually by the Royal College of Surgeons of England since the 1800s.
