About Mr Paul Modi

Mr Paul Modi is one of a small number of surgeons in the UK performing minimally invasive keyhole heart surgery and is currently the only surgeon in the UK undertaking robotic mitral valve surgery and robotic coronary artery bypass grafting. He is the only surgeon in the UK to perform Totally Endoscopic Robotic Mitral Valve Repair, and patients travel from across the world to seek his expertise. He is also a national and international trainer in these advanced techniques.

Mr Modi trained in the leading North American and German heart centres under all of the original pioneers of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery more than 20 years ago.  He spent 12 months in the United States as a Clinical Instructor in Robotic Heart Surgery, working alongside Dr Randolph Chitwood Jr at the East Carolina Heart Institute. There, he developed advanced skills in minimally invasive and robotic cardiac valve surgery and atrial fibrillation surgery. During this time, he recognised the significant benefits of keyhole heart surgery, particularly the faster recovery compared to conventional open heart surgery, where the breastbone is divided.

He was subsequently awarded two scholarships, including the prestigious Society Scholarship for Cardiac Surgery, to train with the European pioneers of minimally invasive cardiac surgery: Professor Fred Mohr in Leipzig, Germany, and Professor Hugo Vanermen in Aalst, Belgium. He undertook further super-specialist training in minimally invasive valve and coronary surgery (including MIDCAB procedures) and thoracoscopic atrial fibrillation surgery across Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands.

On returning to the UK, Mr Modi introduced many of these pioneering techniques into his UK practice. He is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the largest standalone specialist cardiac and thoracic surgery centre in the UK, where over 2,100 open-heart operations are performed each year.

His philosophy is to deliver the same level of surgical excellence seen in the major North American and German centres such as the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic. In addition to his clinical work, Mr Modi teaches surgical skills and basic sciences at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and trains fellow consultants in advanced surgical techniques. He practises both within the NHS and the private sector.

Mr Modi has appeared live on the BBC’s The One Show, which featured him performing a keyhole mitral valve repair; the patient returned to playing golf just three weeks later. He has edited five surgical textbooks and authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, many focusing on the benefits and outcomes of robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

From the very first time I met Mr Paul Modi, I felt 100% confident that I was in the safest possible hands. Although my open heart surgery was considered high risk, I never for one moment doubted that he would complete it successfully and return me to full health. Throughout the entire process, Mr Modi was outstanding. At every stage he kept me fully informed, taking the time to answer questions from both myself and my wife in a clear, concise and understandable manner. His calmness, professionalism and reassurance gave us enormous confidence during what was obviously a very difficult and worrying time. The care and expertise shown by Mr Modi were truly exceptional, and I will always be incredibly grateful for what he has done for me and my family. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Absolutely incredible level of professionalism and dedication, in a perfect bedside manner. All the correct attributes and qualities that made the whole experience so much less terrifying. Paul encapsulates everything required in a medical professional, that has completely restored my confidence and faith in humanity. Went above and beyond any expectation I held, as to how much another human being can do for another. Gods work is prevalent throughout all He does. Thankyou. The Worlds best Heart Surgeon in this Patient’s opinion- for what it is Worth. X Neil.

Mr Modi first crossed my path some years ago when his name was mentioned by a good friend who had been under his care, on this friend's recommendation my wife Lorraine became a patient of Mr Modi. She eventually had a pacemaker fitted and all is progressing well. This was a prelude to my own unfortunate undiagnosed heart problems. My heart attack was on the 31st January 2026 ; I ended up in Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. I was discharged on the 3rd February being advised that I would be called back for an M.R.I .Scan in approximately six weeks. That evening I rang Mr Modi's P/A and was given a consultation date one week later 10th February. I attended one week later and Mr Modi , who had already done his homework, gave me such reassurance, in his words "Just a bit of plumbing and I would be fine." In that moment of need , his assurances that everything was fixable, manageable and that I would be fine was beyond measure. 18th March 2026 I was in theatre ; Mr Modi operating. I had a triple bypass and was then cared for in the Critical Care Unit at the hospital . Unfortunately I contracted pneumonia after my operation which was quickly detected and dealt with immediately. I believe in preventing any disastrous outcome. My observations When I was in the Critical Care Unit and on the ward, Mr Modi would visit daily, sometimes he would visit on more than one occasion . Whenever Mr Modi checked up on me he always came to me first. He would ask how I felt, he wanted the information first hand. He would then assess the data on the machine to "confirm how I felt"." He d...

Paul Modi proved to be an excellent cardiac surgeon with very good interpersonal skills. My minimally invasive Mitral valve repair operation went very smoothly and I experienced minimal pain/discomfort post op. The care received at Spire hospital Manchester was very good and I was able to leave the hospital five days after surgery. Many thanks to everyone involved with my treatment/care at Spire Manchester.

Mr. Paul Modi is a cardiac surgeon at the top of his game. He exudes an air of calmness, confidence and humility which at once puts patients at ease. He is grounded, technically very gifted and relaxed. My mitral valve repair was a complicated operation which he managed successfully. I spent 2 nights in ITU and a further 3 nights in my room on the ward. At all times I felt very well cared for.

I received minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, performed by Mr Modi, at Spire Manchester in March 2026. From start to finish, the entire experience was first class and he is clearly a world leader in the field. Mr Modi clearly explained the risks and why I required surgery immediately, rather than waiting until I was older (I am in my early 40s). The end result was a perfectly performed repair that restores my life expectancy and will allow me to resume scuba diving as well as curing the fatigue that I have suffered for a number of years. My recovery was quick and I felt fully supported both pre and post op. I can't quite describe how appreciative I am of Mr Modi and his expertise.

Mr Modi is an excellent surgeon, who explained everything really well in a calm and assuring manner. The operation to repair my mitral valve and the cryomaze to deal with AF, has transformed my life.

Undergoing open heart surgery can be a relatively stressful experience. However, the preparation was significantly improved by the professional approach and excellent bedside manner demonstrated by Mr Modi. My surgery was successful and this can be attributed to the experience and skill accumulated by Mr modi over years in the cardiac surgery realm. As a dedicated professional he was on hand to ensure that my post operation recovery has been as smooth as possible. The only issue I have had since the surgery has been some dizziness, probably associated with medication. When I reported this issue he accommodated a meeting with me at extremely short notice. In summary, my experience has been that he is a dedicated professional with consumate skills in his chosen specialism.
