Mr Paul Modi is one of a small number of surgeons in the UK performing minimally invasive keyhole heart surgery and is currently the only surgeon in the UK undertaking robotic mitral valve surgery and robotic coronary artery bypass grafting. He is the only surgeon in the UK to perform Totally Endoscopic Robotic Mitral Valve Repair, and patients travel from across the world to seek his expertise. He is also a national and international trainer in these advanced techniques.
Mr Modi trained in the leading North American and German heart centres under all of the original pioneers of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery more than 20 years ago. He spent 12 months in the United States as a Clinical Instructor in Robotic Heart Surgery, working alongside Dr Randolph Chitwood Jr at the East Carolina Heart Institute. There, he developed advanced skills in minimally invasive and robotic cardiac valve surgery and atrial fibrillation surgery. During this time, he recognised the significant benefits of keyhole heart surgery, particularly the faster recovery compared to conventional open heart surgery, where the breastbone is divided.
He was subsequently awarded two scholarships, including the prestigious Society Scholarship for Cardiac Surgery, to train with the European pioneers of minimally invasive cardiac surgery: Professor Fred Mohr in Leipzig, Germany, and Professor Hugo Vanermen in Aalst, Belgium. He undertook further super-specialist training in minimally invasive valve and coronary surgery (including MIDCAB procedures) and thoracoscopic atrial fibrillation surgery across Germany, Belgium and The Netherlands.
On returning to the UK, Mr Modi introduced many of these pioneering techniques into his UK practice. He is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, the largest standalone specialist cardiac and thoracic surgery centre in the UK, where over 2,100 open-heart operations are performed each year.
His philosophy is to deliver the same level of surgical excellence seen in the major North American and German centres such as the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic. In addition to his clinical work, Mr Modi teaches surgical skills and basic sciences at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and trains fellow consultants in advanced surgical techniques. He practises both within the NHS and the private sector.
Mr Modi has appeared live on the BBC’s The One Show, which featured him performing a keyhole mitral valve repair; the patient returned to playing golf just three weeks later. He has edited five surgical textbooks and authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications, many focusing on the benefits and outcomes of robotic and minimally invasive cardiac surgery.

Mr Paul Modi's interactions with patients are calm, professional, and reassuring, fostering a sense of confidence and ease. Patients highlight Mr Modi’s expertise in various complex cardiac surgeries, including open heart bypass, aortic valve replacement, and minimally invasive mitral valve repair. Many report excellent post-operative recovery, experiencing minimal pain and a quick return to daily activities due to his precise surgical skill and dedicated post-op support. His work in mitral valve procedures and coronary artery bypass surgery receives particular recognition.
From my very first consultation through to my surgery and follow-up care, Mr Modi inspired complete confidence. He explained my severe mitral valve regurgitation clearly and honestly, taking the time to answer every question and ensuring both my wife and I fully understood the procedure and expected recovery. I underwent open heart mitral valve repair under his care as I was not suitable for minimal invasive surgery. Mr Modi's expertise, professionalism and calm, reassuring manner made what was naturally an anxious time much easier to face. The operation was a complete success, and my recovery has progressed remarkably well. I was also extremely impressed by the excellent teamwork of everyone involved in my care, from the nursing staff to the wider cardiac team. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Mr Modi to anyone requiring cardiac surgery. He is an outstanding surgeon whose technical skill is matched by genuine compassion and care for his patients.
Mr Modi provides a personal service and ensured I had the right operation. I had 1st Robot Assisted bypass (MIDCAB) LIMA-LAD) at Manchester Spire and discharged after 4 nights. All staff supporting are friendly and I have got to 10,000 steps after 14 days. (5 x 20mins walks a day).
Mr Modi put me at ease, explained all the options and risks involved. I opted for full open heart surgery triple bypass. I had 5 weeks to wait as opposed to 33 weeks if done through National Health. The operation was done 18 days ago. The following day I was standing and came out of hospital after 5 days. Yesterday I walked a mile and a half. Since leaving hospital the only pain relief I have had is paracetamol. My scars are healing nicely. There is no real pain but a bit of discomfort, especially at night when i wake every hour or so. I also get tired during the day and find going to bed for a couple of hours helps. Overall I am amazed at how well I am doing.
Felt very confident in my surgeon after meeting him and explaining the need for a trple heart by pass operation, everything went smoothly and to plan and left to recuperte at home after a 6 day stay in hospital
Mr Paul Modi is an exceptional cardiac surgeon, who put me at ease throughout the process, from my initial appointment to undergoing open heart surgery for aortic valve replacement and aftercare. I felt completely reassured and in very steady and very safe hands. I would highly recommend him, he’s a super chap and I feel very lucky to have him as my cardiac surgeon. He came highly recommended to me and I know why.
Dr Modi was efficient, direct and clear in all communication. I was kept fully up to date throughout the process and his attentive care both pre and post surgery was extremely well received.
Im really pleased to be a patient of Mr Modi. Cardiac surgery is probably daunting for most folks, but its very reassuring to be treated with such care and expertise.
Mr Modi proved to be the ultimate professional and first class surgeon. His reassuring manner and explanations as to the surgical intervention required were carried out to perfection. Myself and my family cannot thank Mr Modi enough.
Welcoming, approachable, friendly, reassuring and made to feel confident and relaxed.
Mr Modi is a highly skilled cardiac surgeon especially in robotics and minimally invasive mitral valve and coronary artery bypass surgery . I have had the pleasure in sharing the care for patients who operated on both privately and in the NHS with fantastic outcome . He is highly recommended by patients and colleagues alike.
