Dr Topun Austin

Dr Topun Austin is a highly accomplished Consultant Neonatologist and Paediatrician who specialises in the care of newborn infants, particularly those requiring intensive care. Based in Cambridge, he divides his time between clinical duties in neonatal intensive care and pioneering research in perinatal neuroscience. Dr Austin is dedicated to improving outcomes for vulnerable newborns, focusing on brain-orientated models of care to protect and support early development.

With a deep interest in how the newborn brain develops and responds to injury, Dr Austin has been at the forefront of developing advanced monitoring and imaging technologies. His clinical work and research focus on translating these novel technologies into routine clinical care to identify vulnerable infants at an early stage. His areas of expertise include neonatal neuroprotection, the assessment of early infant behaviour, functional brain connectivity, and the detection of neonatal seizures. Through collaborative clinical projects, he works to establish innovative cot-side assessments that can help predict and prevent long-term neurodisabilities.

Dr Austin began his medical journey at a prestigious London medical school, where he completed an intercalated Bachelor of Science in Physiology in 1992 and qualified as a medical doctor in 1995. He undertook his specialist clinical training in paediatrics and neonatology across major teaching hospitals in London and Oxford. Driven by a passion for neonatal physiology, he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in optical monitoring and imaging of the brain at a leading London university in 2009. Dr Austin is a member of several prestigious professional bodies, including the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the British Association of Perinatal Medicine, the Neonatal Society, and the European Society of Paediatric Research.
