About Dr. Gary Stiefel
Dr Gary Stiefel has been a Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust since 2012. He is the current lead for the Childrens’ allergy service. It is one of the largest clinics in the UK and offers a comprehensive service.
Gary undertook his medical training at the University of Birmingham and in 2012 completed specialist training in Paediatric Allergy. During his training he worked at both St Mary’s Hospital, London and University Hospital Southampton Foundation Trust and also completed an Allergy MSc at Imperial College London.
Gary was the lead author for the BSACI national guidelines on nut allergy and was involved in
changing the legislation allowing schools to be able to hold generic Adrenaline Autoinjectors alongside Allergy UK and Anaphylaxis UK. In 2020 he led a national British Paediatric Surveillance Unit (BPSU) RCPCH study into FPIES. He is actively involved in peanut desensitisation studies and currently recruiting patients for The Natasha Clinical Trial offering milk and peanut oral immunotherapy.
Gary has previously served as a RCPCH specialist advisory committee members for Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Diseases (2014-2019). He has been a trustee for Allergy UK since 2019 and is the current Health Advisory Board Chair since October 2024.
Gary is actively involved in teaching locally & regionally and regularly lectures on the Allergy MSc at University of Southampton. His interests include food allergy, eczema, allergic rhinitis (including hay fever) and Oral and aeroallergen immunotherapy.
Gary is a member of the BSACI (British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology) and the EAACI
(European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology).

As a parent of a child with allergies, I have learned that knowledge matters, but how that knowledge is shared matters just as much. What stood out about Dr Gary Stiefel was that he never made us feel silly for asking questions, never rushed us, and never hid behind his expertise. Instead, he took the time to explain not only what he thought, but why he thought it. We had previously been told our son had a peanut allergy and to avoid peanuts. Dr Stiefel was the first person who really helped us understand the bigger picture - what the tests mean, what they don't mean, where the uncertainty lies, and how specialists make decisions when there isn't a simple yes or no answer. The same was true for eczema. Rather than simply prescribing another cream, he thought about the longer-term plan and explained the reasoning behind it. What I appreciated most was that we left feeling informed, reassured and involved. He has a rare ability to combine expertise with genuine humanity. Even after the appointment, he took the time to follow up and answer questions. For families navigating allergies, that makes a bigger difference than I can put into words.

Dr Gary was very clear and was able to diagnose our child with an allergy that's uncommon. He was helpful in talking through the advise we would need to follow should our child have another reaction, including the next steps for further investigations.
