About Mr Tom Carter

Mr Tom Carter is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in foot and ankle surgery and complex lower limb trauma. As a specialist foot and ankle surgeon, Mr Carter offers the full spectrum of elective foot and ankle surgery, ranging from forefoot and bunion surgery to complex reconstructive procedures, sports-related foot and ankle injuries and total ankle replacement surgery. His approach combines evidence-based surgical techniques with an individualised, patient-centred approach, helping patients return to activity, work and everyday life.

Mr Carter graduated from both the University of St Andrews and the University of Edinburgh. He completed his specialist orthopaedic training on the South-East Scotland Orthopaedic Training Programme, having ranked first nationally during the competitive orthopaedic specialty recruitment process. Alongside his surgical training, Mr Carter completed a two-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) research degree at the University of Edinburgh. His research focused on improving the care of patients with foot and ankle trauma, providing a strong academic foundation for his clinical practice.

Following completion of his UK training, Mr Carter undertook international fellowship training in Melbourne, Australia. He completed advanced trauma fellowship training at Monash Health before undertaking specialist foot and ankle fellowship training with the internationally recognised OrthoSport Victoria group. During this time, he gained extensive experience in the management of complex foot and ankle conditions and sports injuries, including the treatment of professional athletes.

Mr Carter has published more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific papers and regularly lectures nationally and internationally on foot and ankle trauma and orthopaedic surgery. He is actively involved in surgical education and was awarded Trainer of the Year for South-East Scotland in 2025/2026.

In addition to his orthopaedic practice, Mr Carter has a particular interest in sports medicine and acute injury management. He is a ringside medical officer for the British Boxing Board of Control and regularly provides medical cover at boxing events, with experience in both amateur and professional boxing. Away from work, Mr Carter enjoys sport, running, golf and exploring the Scottish hills with his family and Labrador.

Mr Carter sees patients privately in Edinburgh at Spire Shawfair Park Hospital. He is fee assured with the major medical insurers. His NHS practice is based at Fife Orthopaedics, NHS Fife. His aim is to combine specialist expertise, evidence-based treatment and clear communication to help patients understand their condition and achieve the best possible recovery.
