Dr Simona Balestrini

Dr Simona Balestrini is a highly accomplished Consultant Neurologist who specialises in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of complex neurological conditions, with a particular focus on epilepsy. As a dedicated Consultant Neurologist, she provides expert clinical care to patients experiencing a wide range of neurological challenges. Her clinical practice is deeply integrated with cutting-edge research, allowing her to offer advanced, personalised care pathways that address the unique needs of each individual.

With a profound interest in epilepsy genetics and neurophysiology, Dr Balestrini is at the forefront of translating genomic discoveries into clinical practice. Her clinical expertise spans rare and complex neurodevelopmental disorders, surgical epilepsy evaluations, and the prevention of Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). By utilising state-of-the-art neurophysiological and genomic tools, she aims to uncover the underlying causes of epilepsy, predict treatment responses, and tailor highly specific therapeutic strategies for her patients.

Dr Balestrini qualified in medicine and completed her specialist training in Neurology at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona, Italy, where she was also awarded a PhD in Human Health in 2017. To further her expertise, she completed a research fellowship in London focusing on epilepsy genetics, alongside a specialised fellowship in neurophysiology and surgical epilepsy at a renowned epilepsy surgery unit in Milan, Italy. In addition to her clinical work, she holds academic appointments as an Associate Professor and a Senior Clinical Research Fellow, and she is an active member of the European Academy of Neurology, serving on its eLearning Editorial Board.
