Dr Sarju Athwal

Dr Sarju Athwal is a highly accomplished Consultant Ophthalmologist who specialises in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery. He serves as the Oculoplastic Service Lead for a major NHS trust in the South East of England, where he provides expert care for patients experiencing a wide range of eye and eyelid conditions. Dr Athwal is dedicated to delivering personalised, high-quality treatment, combining his meticulous surgical precision with a reassuring and patient-centred approach. His clinical practice encompasses both complex reconstructive procedures and the management of general ophthalmic emergencies.

With a particular focus on periocular surgery, Dr Athwal specialises in the management and reconstruction of eyelid tumours, thyroid eye disease, and complex lacrimal (tear duct) disorders. He is highly proficient in performing advanced procedures such as ptosis (drooping eyelid) correction, lower lid tightening, and entropion repair, alongside routine treatments like eyelid biopsies, cyst removals, and the drainage of styes. In addition to his surgical work, Dr Athwal has been a pioneer in digital health within ophthalmology, leading initiatives to implement virtual consultations and digital photography clinics to improve patient access and streamline care pathways.

Dr Athwal obtained his primary medical qualification, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and went on to complete his specialist ophthalmic training in London and the South East of England. To further refine his expertise, he undertook prestigious, advanced fellowship training in oculoplastic and lacrimal surgery at a world-renowned eye hospital in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and an active member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society (BOPSS). Alongside his clinical commitments, he is deeply involved in medical education, serving as an Educational Supervisor to train the next generation of Ophthalmologists, and contributes to clinical research with numerous publications in peer-reviewed medical journals.
