Miss Samantha Hunt

Samantha has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust since 2023, where she leads the oculoplastic, lacrimal, and orbital service at the prestigious Bristol Eye Hospital, the largest ophthalmology unit in the South West. Her expertise spans the diverse subspecialties of oculoplastic, orbital, and lacrimal surgery, alongside her continued practice in cataract surgery. Always seeking to enhance patient care, Samantha has pioneered several innovative approaches, including the use of platinum segment chains for patients with facial nerve palsy, offering an alternative to the traditional gold weight, and minimally invasive techniques like flow control punctal plugs for those with narrow tear drainage systems.

Samantha’s ophthalmology training took place in the South West, including several years at Bristol Eye Hospital and a dedicated year focusing on oculoplastic, lacrimal, and orbital surgery. She then completed a fellowship in oculoplastic, orbital, and lacrimal surgery at East Grinstead, a centre renowned for treating patients with facial nerve palsy. Following this, she worked as a consultant in Sheffield, but her strong connection to Bristol led her back when an opportunity to return arose.

Passionate about education, Samantha holds a master’s degree in medical education. She plays an active role in teaching within her clinical practice, has authored educational materials, and contributes to national surgical simulation courses. She also examines ophthalmology trainees both in the UK and internationally, and advocates for educational research within her team.

Outside of work, Samantha is an avid singer and enjoys performing in local pubs and with the Bristol Eye Hospital band.
