About Dr. Derek Ho
Mr Derek Ho is a consultant ophthalmologist based in Cardiff, Wales, specialising in cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, corneal transplantation, and other corneal and conjunctival procedures. He is also the Consultant Lead for Cataract Services at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board. Alongside his NHS consultant work, he also practises privately at Spire Cardiff Hospital and Nuffield Health Cardiff Bay Hospital.
He is a high-volume cataract surgeon, performing and supervising approximately 100 cataract operations each month. For suitable private patients, he offers same-day bilateral cataract surgery using needle-free topical anaesthesia, allowing rapid visual recovery with minimal discomfort.
He graduated from the University of Cambridge and completed his ophthalmology training in Wales, followed by advanced fellowship training in cornea and anterior segment surgery at Bristol Eye Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital.
As a Fellow of both the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) and the European Board of Ophthalmology, Mr Ho is a dual board-certified eye surgeon. He also holds the UK specialist certificate in laser and refractive surgery (CertLRS), reflecting his expertise in advanced vision correction techniques.
He is a Surgical Skills Faculty Trainer at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, teaching and mentoring ophthalmology trainees nationally. Alongside his clinical work, he has authored over 20 peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at national and international meetings. He is a member of UKISCRS and EuCornea.

The team at SpaMedica, Quedgeley work so well together. I felt well looked after throughout the appointment, I was supported and reassured during the procedure by Dr Ho and the operating team who are skilled and efficient. I received really good communication prior to and throughout the appointment, I found the estimating timings for appointments really helpful as I live alone and was reliant on friends and family for transport and was mindful not to cause more inconvenience than needed. Thank you to the team.
From start to finish i found everyone very kind and helpful. I will be very relaxed when I go back again to have my other eye done
My cataract surgery went well. I was expecting some discomfort at times in the process but there were none. No scratchy feelings or other problems and no painkillers need afterwards.
From reception to completion of the procedure my ‘journey’ was excellent.. Informative, respectful and understanding of my nervous disposition……… it would not be easy to single out particular personalities for comment since the staff worked as a team ensuring the experience was seamless. Thank you everyone.
