Dr Robert Longman

Dr Robert Longman is a dedicated Consultant General Surgeon and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon who provides comprehensive, patient-centred care for individuals with lower gastrointestinal conditions. He specialises in managing both benign and bowel cancer conditions using modern, evidence-based practices. Working within collaborative multidisciplinary clinical teams, Dr Longman ensures that each patient receives clear guidance and a tailored treatment plan designed around their specific health needs.

His clinical focus encompasses laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, anal cancer management, coloproctology, and surgical intervention for complex endometriosis. As a skilled practitioner of keyhole techniques and diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy, Dr Longman prioritises minimally invasive approaches to reduce post-operative discomfort, minimise recovery times, and optimise patient outcomes. He has also played an influential role in pioneering Enhanced Recovery Programmes that support patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures.

Beyond his clinical commitments, Dr Longman is deeply involved in surgical research, medical education, and clinical simulation training. He has led regional postgraduate surgical training initiatives, mentored surgeons in advanced laparoscopic techniques, and contributed significantly to developing novel simulated teaching methods. His research activities focus on advancing colorectal cancer care, mucosal protection of the large bowel, and enhancing overall surgical standards.

Dr Longman completed his medical training in the UK, USA, and Canada, earning a Bachelor of Science (BSc) and a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). He was awarded a PhD in surgical sciences research from the University of Bristol in 2000 and was named a Hunterian Professor by the Royal College of Surgeons of England for his research contributions. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS), a Member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland, and a Member of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland.
