About Dr. Rick Adams
Dr Rick Adams is a consultant general adult psychiatrist based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, a tertiary centre for neuropsychiatric disorders such as complex neurodevelopmental disorders, rare causes of psychosis, mood disorders in neurological conditions, and functional neurological symptoms. He specialises in psychosis and neuropsychiatry and has research interests in these areas.
Dr Adams has worked as a doctor in the NHS since 2004, covering a range of areas including outpatient and inpatient general adult psychiatry, neurodevelopmental disorders, neuropsychiatry, older adult psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. He currently holds a weekly clinic in the Camden Early Intervention in Psychosis NHS service, for the diagnosis and treatment of young people.
He gained a BSc in Medicine and Neuroscience from Cambridge University before undertaking his MBBS at the University of London. In 2014, he undertook a PhD looking at the use of computational models in understanding the neurobiology of psychosis and functional symptoms. He has remained active in research and has published more than 55 research papers and 7 book chapters to date.
He is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of Physicians, and he is an approved clinician under section 12 of the Mental Health Act.

My recent appointment with Dr Adams was extremely positive and reassuring. From the beginning he created a calm and respectful environment where I felt genuinely listened to, which is something I have often struggled to find in mental health services. He explains things clearly and in a way that actually makes sense, which has helped me understand my condition and how to manage it much better than before. What stood out most was not just his knowledge but also his kindness and patience. He also takes the time to acknowledge and speak with my partner, who supports me day to day, which means a great deal to both of us. For someone dealing with complex PTSD and related difficulties, that level of understanding and compassion makes a real difference.

We recently referred a client with an acquired brain injury who was displaying episodes of anger incorporating challenging behaviour. Dr Rick Adams was easy to talk to and he quickly and accurately grasped the situation and recommended suitable treatment. Because of distance we opted for a video consultation which worked very well. The whole experience was excellent and I have no hesitation in recommending him.
Dr. Adams is exceptional. I have a complex case of PTSD and have struggled with other psychiatrists not being able to find the right medicinal balance in the past. Dr. Adams was able to quickly identify the problems I was having with past medicines and find the correct medicine for me. My life has become enjoyable once more.
